Ruger #1

I love Ruger number #1's. I used to own several of them but had to sell them when I was in college. Over the last 12 years I have bought 3 new ones. Two in 25-06 and a 22-250. None of them have shot even close to adequate. I have been getting a hankering to try them again, it has been 4 years sense my last Ruger purchase but have been burned 3 times now. Ruger customer service feels that 3-5 inch groups are ok in their firearms. My question is have any of you bought any in the last few years and did they shoot reasonably accurate. I know lots of tricks for squeezing accuracy out of rifles including the number one. I just don't want to be in the position again of trying to put a bow on a turd. I really am having a desire for a 6mm or a new 300 mag., just don't want to waste my money again.

I bought a new #1 stainless varmint about 3 years ago in 243 cal. I was not pleased with the accuracy. Factory loads would group about 1 1/2". I didnt reload at the time so I couldnt play around to see what the rifle would really do. I traded in off, and I kinda regret it. I believe that I would be able to get some handloads that would shoot to my liking. I may try a #1 again if I find the right deal.
I love the way they look.
Good luck.

I have had a couple of No.1's over the years and have always liked them. On the flip side, they never shot to my likings. Like you, I have thought about buying another, but their reputation for accuracy scares me away.

i have owned many and find the heavy barrels shoot better due to the two piece stock configuration without going to the trouble of floating the forend and all that stuff. There have been a few good articles on accurizing the forend. I have not done it- but my 22-250 #1V is a hammer.

I have 2 really nice looking #1s. The 22-250 sports a Kepplinger trigger and shoots extremely well. The factory 243 shoots about 1.5" groups on average. Both are wearing Nikon Monarchs, the last 2 I own.......

I have a couple of Ruger # 1 rifles. One I took in trade for a 30 year old Yamaha dirt bike that he wanted more than me. This gun (.243 Win) will shoot sub one inch groups with the 95 grain Noslers that were clocking at 3300 FPS out of my 26" barrel. Daughter killed a nice fat doe with it.

Got me some of those little 55 grain Noslers loaded up in it and put three into a nickle at 100 yards. 4000 fps too. I was impressed. It dont get out of my safe much anymore because I like the .17, 20's and .224 cals more, but I know that if I want it to, it will punch praire poodles a good ways out there. But it is rather light, and I never get to see the hit so it stay home. Pity. Maybe I should just get someone else to shoot it for me so I can watch the dogs blow up. Hey- if you aint gotta ticket you cant watch the show!

I bought a No. 1 about 6 years ago and put a VX1 3X9 on it shooting 55gr Federal Priemiums out of it it has about a 5/8" to 7/8" goup depending on how I am shooting that day. Have taken many amimals out past 200 yards with it and never thought twice about it but I have a lot of faith in the gun also. If I had the money I would probably pick up another one in 45-70 but thats another story.

I have a #1 in .204 kbbv and it shoots very well (you don't know how bad I want to say 1/4" groups all day long just to start it again. lol) I would definitly buy another as I love the looks of them, probably in .243 or .308.

Ruger started manufacturing their own hammer forged barrels in 1998. The German built hammer forging equipment cost Ruger 3.5 million dollars with installation of the Ruger made barrels into the Ruger #1 with the change to the black recoil pad.

The Ruger #1 with the newer barrels are a vast improvement over the previously supplied Wilson barrels.

Make sure your forearm does not contact the front of the Ruger #1 frame and have adequate forend pressure on 3 sides of the barrel at the forend tip and the #1's will shoot accurately.

I just picked up one in 7mm, always wanted one and it will be used for hunting not target shooting so I would think 1.5 to MOA would kill anything I would be going for but I expect it will do much better than that. What a beautiful gun I really dont care if I ever do anything more than open the safe and fondel it once in a while LOL!!!!!!!

Love my Rugers !

I bought a new Rugar M77-Target Grey Target that has the bull barrel this past August. The only thing I had done to it was the shop owner, (who does gunsmithing) worked the trigger for me to get it down to 10 oz. Accuracy is what this gun does best. You'd never want to compare the action on a new Ruger to any other manufacturer because it's simply,,,well HORRIBLE is an understatement, but man does it shoot. I've pretty much settled on a load as it likes 52 Gr Sierra HPBT's and 34.9 gr of RL 15. I gets groups of .375 regularly at 100 yds. Tighter if I work at my shootin skills. But let me warn you...Rugers have only two types of barrels...good ones and bad ones. I have two other Rugers (in.308, Bull Barrel & 30.06 - Hunting Barrel) and both both are extremely accurately, partly because of load work up. So I got lucky. I do know some who haven't been as fortunate and had to do barrel changeouts to make it work accurately. That comment about groups of 3"s would make me go looking for another manufacturer in a heartbeat. If I wanted three inch groups I'd take up handgranade throwing. (In fact take a look at the new Savage line. Their new weapons are incredible both in worksmanship and performance. And the groups they shoot are awesome).
Not to make you change you mind, but so you know what you are looking at when you pay these somewhat "big bucks" for guns these days. By the time I got my new Ruger done with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x14x40, I had put in about $1050. The new Savage .223 I just got (Xmas present to myself), was worse with the same scope setup of around $1250. So choose wisely unless you have an endless money pit or a rich daddy, neither of which I have.
Good luck in "the search" for happiness and accuracy. It don't come easy sometimes.

I bought my first No.1 in 1970. it is a 243 and I still have it. It was the first brand new rifle I bought. I also have No. 1's in 30-06 and 45-70. Over the years I have probably owned a dozen No.1's and alway have been interested in the history of these cool rifles.

What hasn't been mentioned here is that non prefix No.1s and early prefixed No.1's all had a Douglas barrels. The point for change from Douglas the Wilson barrels I have heard used throughout the years is that they were certainly changed by 130-10,000. Certainly the non prefix guns and the early 130 guns, say 130-5000 or so have Douglas barrels. After that it's a guess when they actually changed. Like most things at Ruger it probably wasn't instantaneous and probably lagged over time.

The Wilson barrels came in 1972 - 1973.

Ruger barrels began in 1991.

All of the No.1's I currently own have Douglas barrels and shoot very well. Also they all have nicely adjustable triggers.

Thank you those that gave their input. Years ago I had 3 #1's a 22-250, 25-06 and 338 win mag. The 22-250 was a tack driver the other 2 shot good. I shot the barrel out of the 22-250 and rebarreled it to a 17 rem. It also shot great. Used it back in the days of fur hunting when coyotes were worth something. When I started my second career and went back to grad school I really didn't have a place to store my guns. I sold over 40 long guns. Some of those I sold still break my heart. I have slowly been trying to get back some of those guns that I really liked. But like I said. I have bought 3 # 1’s and been extremely disappointed in the way they shot. I don't mind spending money on a quality firearm, but they should shoot. What I got from Ruger when I tried to have something done was if they functioned, there was not a lot they were willing to do. Hopefully their customer service has improved greatly. I have never owned one of the Brownings, maybe I should look there, but there is something about # 1's that keeps me coming back. I know we have a lot of savage fans here and I own several and yes they shoot. This is not just about a shooter. I hunt with savages a lot. The desert southwest and 4 wheelers are not friendly on guns and savages fit into the beater class quite nicely. Sometimes I just like to have a quality piece of equipment, but it still has to shoot.

I have 2 #1's,a 6MM Liberty model (1976) and a 220 Swift made in 1982. Both shoot great with my handloads. My son also has 2, a 25-06 and 22-250. They're both shooters too. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another in fact, I'm looking for one in 22 Hornet.

Longtime lurker, new poster here. I just wanted to chime in about these #1's. IMO you can't buy a classier looking rifle but will admit some don't shoot very well. I've got four and three shoot lights out.

If you're lucky enough to know the shop owner selling used guns you might talk him into letting you take a gun to the range and check it out for yourself. Works for me although these guys seem to be becoming fewer and farther between.

Don't give up because when you do find a shooter they usually shine. My 220 Swift 1V has accounted for a lifetime of memorable shooting. Round count is 5500 give or take. My 25-06 1V is just as impressive although has not been with me as long (16 years). The little 223 1V is as fun and enjoyable a gun as you can have. A 22-250 1B has been lack luster at best but is the oldest and smoothest. I did have a 218 Bee 1B , if I recall correctly, that shot well enough but a friend had to have it worse than I did. Maybe I just love 1V's!!

Anyhoo, good luck!

Scott
