Ruger 10/22 free float?

How's it going guys, I just picked up my first ruger 10/22 yesterday. it is the deluxe sporter model ( checkered walnut stock and NO barrel band) I have always been told that light sporter weight barrels have always preformed better with full length bedding or with upward pressure at the end of the stock. I have read a bit online and some people say they free float their 10/22's. It would be easy to do mine since it does not have that barrel band on it, I was just wondering what you guys do to yours. I know I need to go shoot it before I do anything but just thought I would ask. thanks a lot for the input in advance!

I have the same rifle except I replaced the barrel with a varmint contour Shilen that is freefloated and then bedded the action and also installed a pillar

If it doesn't shoot good, then float it. If fhat doesn't work then bed it. If that doesn't work rebarrel it. If that doesn't work buy a CZ

Honestly believe you can get the most out of a 10/22 with the barrel bedded in some fashion. But you won't catch me dead doing it. For a field gun lack of consistency and changing conditions will play havoc. IMO the only folks should be bedding barrels are shooting custom rigs from a bench at targets. On factory 10/22s used for plinkin, hunting and the like floating is the only way to go. Save bedding barrels for when you start throwing aftermarket $$$ at the thing, if you ever do.

The way to make a 10/22 shoot the best is to bed only a few inches of the barrel, free float the rest of the barrel and all the action.
Also, threading the action and screwing a good barrel on is well worth the effort.

This is what the guys on rimfire central preach. Some even bed a little halfway up the stock to put slight upward pressure on the barrel. It seems to work for them and they have some good shootin 10/22's. Old Turtle seems pretty familiar with the 10/22 maybe he will chime in.
