I started my rifle shooting at age eight with a single-shot bolt-action Remington .22LR. My shotgun was a single-shot Winchester M37 .410. At about 12-13, the .410 was traded for the same model but in 20 gauge. At 16, the single-shot 20 was swapped for a Remington 870 12-gauge. And at 15-ish, I got a new Ruger 10/22 for squirrel hunting. Dad had a Browning BLR-22, Remington 572, a Marlin M60, and a wonky Mossberg with a plastic forearm that folded down, as some AR rifles now have a vertical foregrip. Pretty sure Dad bought me the Ruger so he could get some experience with it. Afterward, some version of a 10/22 was always in the mix of rimfires we had around.
