Hello i have a 77/17 hmr all weather i bought from a member here that has been free floated and it shoots like a dream it will drive tacks. I bought a 77/22 mag all weather and it shoot good but not exellent so i did my first free float on it and know it shoots exellent at 50 yrds one hole 5 shoot groupe. Heres my question i backed to 100 and it opened up to about 1 inch 8 shoot groupe but im 2 inches to the left of point of aim. question is did i free float it right. I just kept sanding and removeing wood until i could get a dollar bill to slide down the barrel with no resistance all the way to the mounting lug. Dont get me wrong it shoots pretty good but not as good as the 17 hmr thats is twin. It has a good scope and mounts on it im shooting the hornady v-max ammo i think it is 30 or 32gr. Thanks

IMHO if you are floating a barrel in a wood stock I would go more than a dollar bill as any moister that might get in the stock and warp it a tad. It wouldn't take much and you got pressure on the barrel again. I try for about 1/32 clearance myself. I had a 30/06 in a 110 Savage that shot better with a tad of pressure under neath the barrel at the very front of the stock.

I have a 22 mag with the 24" all weather lami stock. It shoots about the same as your which is very good. I floated mine but I gave it more than a dollar bill, probably 3 or 4 bills. My impact changed a bunch after the stock work but give the barrel a little extra room like DAB says.

Are you concerned because your point of impact changed after you modified the stock? If so, I wouldn't get real excited yet. Just re-zero and see what happens.

If the concern is going from a bughole at 50 to an inch at 100, just try the same thing again a couple of times to see if it was just an atmospheric anomaly. If not, try different ammo.

Sounds like it is shooting rather well!!

Thanks guys i will take a little more out. mine is the laminate as well not real wood. I wasnt thinking really good when i said wood.

I have the same gun, I have not done anything to the stock. it will shoot one ragged hole at 50 yrds and 1 to 1.5 inch at 100.

what ammo have you been using? Mine LOVES the Remington Premier 33grain accutips...Never shot a coyote with it yet but, i have popped a few crows with it.

Pretty dang stiff. Matter of fact that is not helping one bit. The 17hmr trigger has been worked and is smooth the 22 mag feels like 3 1/2 it is the worse trigger i have felt on a ruger. Should of thought about that to begin with.

Actually it sounds like your 77/22mag is doing fine. I have 3 different 77/xx rifles and I find that they are very temperamental to how much the receiver screws are tightened. I usually torque them to about 30 inch pounds +/- a little. Play with that and you will notice every time you change it it will change POI. If the scope has AO be sure to set it up for the different ranges. If it is non AO a good part of the 2 inch error could be caused by eye alignment with the cross hairs. With mine I also put VQ trigger sears in 2 of them and a rifle basix trigger in the other. The lighter triggers sure do remove a bunch of human error. Keep shooting and have fun.

I agree w/bkauz on the Rem. 33gr. For anything heavier than a crow I like Federal 50gr. game shock. Try out every weight and brand that you can, you'll find what your rifle likes.

Try a Volquartsen(sp)target sear in it. Can get them thru Rimfire Sports for about $32 delivered, makes a world of difference in the trigger........
