ruger 77/22 hornet

i ordered a ruger 22 hornet the other day does anyone else use the hornet i want it for a close range coyote rifle but mainly for bobcat.Also if anyone has any accuracy pics please post
 
My 2 sons and I all have Ruger 77/22 Hornets and we love them. I've never shot a coyote or bobcat (I hope to get a bobcat with it this year) but have used it on groundhog a lot. Shot hogs from 25 yards to almost 200 yards and worked perfectly.

We all use Hornady 35 gr. V-Max bullets with Lil-Gun powder and CCI small pistol primers. We worked up our loads 1/10 th grain at a time to find the sweet spot. This load might be a little light and fragile for coyote but I think it should be good for bobcat.

Got one love it! Killed many coyotes turkey and deer with mine. From 35gr. V-maxs to 45 gr. SP all handloads nothing but handloads. I like H110 very high velocitys with that powder 35gr. V-maxs 3,000+fps. knock a coyote for a loop! Whitetail load 45gr. Sierra SP 2,500fps. good mushroom good penitration and legal where I live. And I love that clip on the Ruger. ~Marco
 
I used to have one. It was very accurate especially with a 40gr Sierra HP and IMR 4227 powder. I also shot some of the 35 and 40gr Vmax but best resulsts were with the 40gr sierra. Killed a few fox with it, all around a very nice rifle for walk around predator hunting. There are a couple of accuracy fixes out there, a shim to take some of teh play out of teh two piece bolt. I didn't have to do anyting to mine but a buddy of mine had one of the heavy barreled laminated stock versions that needed a litte work to get good accuracy out of.

I'm sure you will realy enjoy it.
 
I like the Hornet for down loads, 40gr. bullets at 22 Lr or 22 mag velocitys. Or cast bullet shooting. I worked up a real accurate load Sierra 40gr. varmint HP with IMR4198 at 2,100fps real real accurate at 100yds. great squirrel round quiet too! ~Marco
 
I've owned my Ruger M77 Hornet for over 10 years and have killed many a coyote with it. I have settled on a 45gr Barnes XLC over 13.0gr Lilgun, ignited by a small pistol primer. I get just over 2,900fps and MOA. For coyotes, I found the heavier bullet, 45gr or more, works better.

My personal distance restrictions, which apply to me and coyotes, are 100yds if they are facing me and 175yds if they are broadside. I have been known to stretch, but not by much.

Love my hornets i shoot a Savage model 40 and a CZ 527 both shoot great right out of the box. My favorite load is 45gr Sierra SP with lil,Gun powder 12.7 gr the 35-gr V-Max works well same load. Shot many coyotes and a bobcat knocks them dead
 
Ive taken some nice 8pt. bucks with my hornet some six pt. bucks and doe. I like using a good bullet that penetrates just like one would use in a big game rifle. I like the 50gr. SP and 45gr. SP at 2,500fps I don't push them to fast I don't want to much expansion. Also always keep the range short inside 100yds. I don't shoot at running deer and if I can I try for neck shots. Ive dropped some of those deer in there tracks with the little hornet, Ive been using it this year and will take it this weekend. ~Marco

Well I am glad to hear of someone having some success with the Hornet. I wouldn't try it myself (on deer), but I'd love to have one for fox and fisher. We can't shoot bobcats up here... yet.
 
The 8pts. run maybe 75yd. the 6pts and the does DRT. We have small deer here in Arkansas the Game an Fish had a write-up a few year ago where they said average weight for a buck was around 115 lbs. So a doe that might weigh 70 to 80 pounds live weight is no big deal with the little hornet. But like I say know your rifle have a good bullet and take the good shot if the shot aint thar don't pull that trigger! ~Marco
 
Several years ago for Christmas my wife gave me a Ruger 77/22 Hornet Target with laminated stock. Had to do some bedding, as well as shim the bolt and a trigger job to get it to act right:) I've killed several bobcat's, a half dozen coyote's and two grey fox with mine. Also dispatched more than a few feral dogs with it, as well as a feral hog that went about 150 pounds. It's a neat little rifle and I'm proud to own it. It's also a great cartridge to load for as well.

read the past blogs on making them shoot, as stated- shim the bolt, Voltq trigger group and polish the sear, float the stock and bed the action- then top it off using pistol primers behind Lilgun.
