ruger 77/22 hornet

WVhunter, I like the Winchester loads but I reload for my Hornet now. And for a scope Id go with a good 3x9x40 like the Leupold Rifleman. And as far as predators and varmints the Hornet will work on all of them inside 200yds. Coyote loads any will work just put the bullet in the right spot. ~Marco
 
I shoot calhoon bullets in mine, it took some time for me to get it to shoot, but after that it has always performed. I use it for PD, fox, feral cats, and the occasional coyote..
 
no time to read all the posts on this- i am sure someone touched on the issues SOMETIMES needed to make a 7722 perform: shim the bolt, pistol primers, floating the barrel, bedding the action, and installing about 40 bucks of VoltQ trigger parts. All easy and will make it shoot well (in case it doesn't). I will post the address to order the bolt shims later. You need to use .009 (I think) thickness to start with work both directions for a tight bolt. Can use a wet stone to thin it down as needed.
 
follow up on shims; google McMaster-Carr, (404)346.7000. order either the .005 thickness SS shims, or an assortment package. Cost about 10 bucks. Mine at 0.005 were too thick so I had to wet stone them down to about 0.003 for the best lock up. You need to specify ID 3/8"s and OD 5/8s"- you may need to do a little bit of grinding (15 seconds with a rat tail).

Then bed the action and float the barrel (easy job), and install the Voltsquartsen trigger group- you can get them on sale all the time through Midway ($40). Last find your best pet load and change out the primers to pistol primers. I like Lilgun on a 40-45 grain bulllet.
 
Scope, because of the range can be out to 150 and a tad bit further on yotes or as close 5 feet I would go 3x9. I put a Burris Full Feild on mine and the ballistic plex elevation marks work out great out to 150-160 yards. I zero at 70 yards and use the first mark for 150-160 with my pet load.
 
One of my best loads is 45GR Sierra soft point and lil'gun powders 12.7 grs works great in both of my guns. the v-Max also works well with the same load.
 
I was fortunate to have been given two Win. Model 70's (pre 64) a couple of years ago. One in .22 hornet, the other in .220 swift. Both are extremely accurate and I've killed one coyote with the hornet with 45 gr sp. The swift is currently at the gunsmith getting a new scope installed as it had a 12 power lyman target scope that was not suitable for hunting. As for deer, I have a friend who uses it pretty extensively, BUT he only takes standing neck / head shots for meat. I wouldn't personally recommend either for deer, definitely not the hornet.

Kudos on getting two EXCELLENT pre-64 Model 70's. Both are VERY desireable today, and I've seen asking prices for those Hornets at $4995. So, you have rifles of value. My shop teacher in high school had a pre 64 Swift. I used to drool all over it...

we sighted mine in at 20 to get the scope on and it shoots 6" high at 70 if i went ahead and zeroed it in at 70 were would that put me down range
 
mine is zeroed at 70 and again at 120. using 45 gr w lilgun. perfect for what I am using for and still in MOC at 150. run a target at 100, 125,150 for your POI. I use a Burris FF w Ballistic Plex, great combo.
