Ruger 77 Hawkeye

Been lurking at one in a local shop. Its used but not abused in 22-250. IDK the difference in a standard Hawkeye and a Predator. If there is a difference or if they are the same rife??? This one isn't a heavy barrel and is in the Green Mountain stock with I guess the target gray finish. Are they shooters or just Meh? I know my luck with Rugers has been hit and miss. Some times its a pretty rifle with mediocre accuracy. Sometimes I get lucky and it looks good and shoots good to. What do folks with the same rifle have to say?

Turns out the ones with the Green Mountain laminate stock and target gray finish is the Predator.

Well, Mr. No Will Power struck again. Went back to Bass Pro, that's where the Ruger was. I looked it over really good again. I also ask if by chance there was the original box as well. Turns out, BPS bought a huge amount of rifles and handguns from Davidson's. This Ruger is one of the many. Turns out, its unfired with original box and matching Ruger rings and all the paper work. BPS has a sale going on now with 10% off all used firearms plus I get a 5% military discount. Even though unfired and in the box, its considered used. Out the door for $829. The rings and box is what put me over the edge as rings are about $75. After that all will power went out the window. LOL as if I had will power.

Congrats. The ruger 77 is definitely towards the top of my favorite rifles list. What scope are you thinking of mounting?
IDK yet. I don't think I will use anything much over 14x and if I stay with factory rings, it will need to be a 1" tube. I put an old clunker Chinese POS on it last night but didn't even tighten the rings as I know that isn't gonna be on there very long. Mainly just to check for size and fit. It won't be anything Tacti Kool for sure.

Is that the heavy laminate stock? If so I had one a few years ago in 300 win mag and it shot very well. The action was smooth too.

It a laminate stock. Its green and black. They call it the Green Mountain. Its not a really heavy barrel either more like a magnum sporter. Amazingly, it has a decent trigger out of the box. About 2 1/2 lbs. Probably just leave it alone for now. The barrel isn't floated but before I do anything I want to shoot it first. Strange, a year ago I didn't own a Ruger. Now I have four. A No.1, a 77 and 2 Americans.

I've heard you can send the factory rings in and exchange them for 30mm. I can't remember if I've ever done it or not though. I like 1 inch scopes. Thr burris signature hd is a great value, also the cabelas instinct branded meopros pop up on ebay and can be found for a deal if you keep an eye out.

Well I hate to say it but me and the Ruger aren't getting off to a very good start. I got 30 rounds loaded but the range is shut down for berm repair so no shooting for a few more days. I read on the Ruger forum that if the mag box is to tight it can cause accuracy issues. So...I took my rifle apart and the box is tight but its a lot like a Remington and the box actually fits up in the action. Its gonna be hard to get it floppy loose. So I put it all back together and the cover won't snap back into the trigger guard. After an hour or so and taken apart and put back together without using brute force, the bottom metal will not close. I shimmed the front screw didn't help. Shimmed the trigger guard and that didn't help. I even took the mag box completely out and it still didn't close. What I did do was take the front screw completely out and then it closes very easy. So, today I took everything apart again, put the trigger guard back in using nuts and bolts to hold it in place (no action is in the stock). Then I bed the front of the trigger guard using no screw and in the closed position. If this doesn't work I may have to make a pillar. Even my gun smith said he had never seen this so I'm grabbing straws trying to fix my new gun. Strange, it doesn't matter if its NIB or used, if its got issues it ends up at my house. LOL, just a day in the life I guess.

Sure you didn't have the screws mixed up?
Can't mix them up. Forward screw is 1/4" and the rear are 10/32. Had it apart and together more times than I can remember trying to figure it out. LOL I cut up every can in the house making shim stock and a bunch of washers for the trigger guard. The only way the floor plate would close is with the forward screw less than finger tight or completely out. I drilled a few holes for bedding to grip to, bolted the trigger guard in the stock using nuts on the bolts. Left the barreled action completely out of the stock. Then filled the forward screw area with bedding. Then used a zip tie to hold the trigger guard in place in the closed position. Let it set over night, then took it all back apart and cleaned up everything. Now it works as it should.

My Browning BPS. To get the trigger assembly out all you have to do is pull a pin and slide it right out. So easy a blindfolded monkey can do it. It just that easy to put back together too. HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every dang time I put it back together it takes me 15mins!!!!!!!!! I can not get it to slide in like it should to save my life. A few times I just put it away until the next day!

I got to thinking, scary I know, but even though the Ruger looked new, I'm wondering if it really was. Years ago, I bought a rifle that came from Davidson's. I had issues with it and they have a "No questions asked" return policy so I returned it and got a replacement rifle. Bass Pro bought several thousand firearms from Davidson's and I can't help but wonder now if it might have been a rifle someone had problems with and returned it. To the every day Joe, being a new rifle he/she didn't want to mess with it. To some the floor plate not opening or closing on a brand new rifle could be reason enough for a replacement. Being sold to me as "Used" I didn't have that option. Being a retired maintenance man, problems were my specialty. LOL! That and its mine now and no returns. But perseverance paid off and I got it fixed. Now........to see if its gonna shoot little bitty groups. Or if my works not done yet.

No telling. It could have been like a promo deal or something. GUNPRIME has a lot of Mossberg shotguns that were used in a promo shoot. They are technically used, but have never been sold to anyone.

Aired out the Ruger this morning. 50 grain V-Max with 40 grains of CFE 223. That's book max plus 2/10's of a grain. Shot beside a Garmin Xero.........4026FPS. A 5 shot group was about 3/4" at 100yds. Hot temps and a pretty stiff breeze made shooting a little uncomfortable but still enjoyed the morning. I still have a hard time believing the velocity but the shot before it was 3986. Need to work on the spread difference and tighten up the group a little as well. Boy, I do like that little Garmin. But I don't like the price to well.
