Any of you guys know anything about or used this rifle? I was looking at one and thought it might be a good light weight rifle for packing in the mountains. How about accuracy?

Shake n bake,
Thanks. Any of you guys using one of these? Or am I going to be the guinea pig?

I have been bouncing around considering the Ruger or a Rem Model 7 LS. My objective is to lessen the weight I carry in the mountains. With all my camera equipment, hunting stuff and a little grub my pack gets a little heavy.

Greg223,I recently purchased a Ruger 77 Compact in .223.I have not had a chance to shoot it at the range yet but hope to do so this week.I bought mine because I'm getting up there in age and felt I needed a lighter carry rifle for calling.I'm impressed with the fit and finish of the rifle and it mounts to my shoulder quickly. If you can wait a few days I'll let you know what I get for groups using a few different loads off the store shelf.I do not handload anymore. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I'll wait to see how you do. I'm going lighter for the same reason. What did you put on it for a scope? I was thinking of the Leupold 3-9 Compact.

I've got two Model Sevens - one in .223 and one in 7mm-08.
You wouldn't go wrong with one of them!
The stainless/synthetic is quite light and almost indestructable!

me!

Me is correct on the M7 for predator hunting. I also use a Remington M7 in 223 for hunting. My rifle is finished in matte black DuraCoat and wears the factory synthetic stock. The scope is a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40. It makes a nice light carry rifle. Coyote accurate too. MI VHNTR

i have had a ruger 77 mkII for about 3 years now. mine is in 260 but its a real shooter, and delightful to handle because of its size.

I have the Ruger Compact in .243 with a Leupold VXII 3-9x40. It is a great shooter and great carry gun. Mine shoots Winchester 100gr power points right at an inch at 100yrds when bagged (and when I'm not shaking). I also shoot it very well off-hand.

I like the controlled round feed, integral "scope base", and the three postion safety, but I haven't really compared it to Remington or Savage bolt-actions.

Greg223,I had an older Redfield 3x9 Compact that I put on mine.I would definately recommend that you go with a compact scope and in my book there is none better(in the price range)than Leupold.Tomorrow should be a nice day,so hopefully I'll get to the range then,it has been raining here for nearly two weeks.I'll let you know how it shoots.

I went to the range today.I bore sighted the Ruger and sighted it in at 25 yds. to get it on paper.I then fired four three shot groups at 100 yds..Of the 12 rounds fired two were flyers,no doubt me and not the gun.Group size measured 1.5" for all 12 rounds. If I throw out the two flyers the group measures .75".Needless to say I'm happy with the accuracy of the Ruger 77 Compact.I was shooting Winchester 45 gr. HP"s (in the white box).I refuse to spend $20.00 or more for a box of .223 ammo.It became very windy before I was able to try other loads. But then,if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I did have some trouble with the rounds feeding.I believe the problem occurs when I am not careful to seat the last two rounds all the way back in the magazine well. When I started using caution when stacking the rounds in the magazine the misfeeds did not occur. Also the edge of the mouth of the mag. well is sharp and serated. This might contribute to a feeding problem.I intend to file the edges with a fine flat file.
Also, the trigger pull is quite heavy.I might not even notice it when shooting at a yote but I'm going to take it to the gunsmith and see what he can do for not too much money. If that does'nt work I will buy an after market trigger group.
I hope this helps in your decision.

ADK,
Sure does. Thanks. Yeah, filing those sharp edges should help. The one I am looking at has a stiff trigger. I appreciate you taking the time to keep me informed. I think I will go ahead and give one a whirl.

greg,
I love my Ruger M77 All-Weather n 223. I know it is not identical, but similar. I love the way it handles, and shoots. I also really like the controlled feed, and the three position safety(ability to unload with safety on).
Good luck,
kevlars

kevlars,
I have one of those. It shoots very good and the trigger is at about 2.5 lbs. It was that way when I got it. I want the Compact because these ol' bones need a little relief when they are rattling around these mountains. They (the mountains) are getting steeper and taller. I have another one with the laminated stock and I had some feeding difficulties with it. A file cured that. I think Ruger may need a little better quality control.
