Ruger 77 Rimfires accuracy

The Ruger 77 rimfires built in the last 3 or so years have screwed in barrels as opposed to the original clamped in barrels. This should result in better accuracy which I believe is Ruger's goal. Has anyone compared accuracy between the two types of barrels?

The 77 model rimfires never had accuracy to get excited about across the board. I'm sure as in everything there are individual rifles that are good shooters. But they won't have the average accuracy capability of a CZ or Annie. I wasn't aware Ruger had gone to a threaded barrel receiver joint in the 77 rimfires. Threaded vs press/pin is not the determinant for accuracy but plays a role. The Annies have pressed/pinned barrels and they take most of the gold at high level rimfire events.

If Ruger would make a 77/22 that is CZ accurate I would buy another one in a heartbeat. I had one several years ago, I loved it's look and feel but it's mediocre accuracy drove me nuts!

I had a Ruger 77/17 years ago and that thing was insane accurate for a rim fire. One of those ones you wish you I wish I didn't sell.

I shot the new Ruger Walnut 77/22 Mag again yesteday. Shooting with a Leupold 3X9 VX2, 5 shot groups from the bench at 100 yards using Win 40 gr solids. Accuracy at about 3" was ok for a brand new rifle with a too stiff trigger. The shooter next to me gave me some (5)Hornady 30 gr loads and things got a little better, down to about 2". I'm hoping that after a trigger job and a few hundred rounds to break in the barrel she'll shoot a lot better. I need to find some 30 gr V Max type Ammo.
Weather permitting I'll try the Ruger 77/17 Stainless synthetic next Sunday. I do have a several brands of 17gr and 20 gr ammo for it and I'll be using a Leupold 6.5X20 scope for testing.

I like the Rugers. No experience with the CZ. I had a 77/17 laminate when the 17 first came out and it was insanely accurate as described by Bobtails. Wish I still had it. I would target shoot the bat that was on the cap of the Bacardi bottles at around 75 yards for fun. I got the caps from a local bar and I have no idea why I liked shooting the Bacardi bat ha. It was a great rifle. I had a 22 mag laminate that wasn't as accurate but it didn't bother me. I now have the synthetic 22 mag with the threaded barrel. I had it recrowned and threaded for a suppressor. I have only ever shot it suppressed. It is super accurate. If I knew how to put pics up I would show what it can do. 5 shots at a 100 covered by a dime using the Hornady 30 grainers. It loves those. Other stuff is ok but the Hornadys are the bomb. I have no idea how it shot before it was recrowned and threaded. I bought it new. I like it a lot.

I have one of the first ones made, and I too liked its look and feel, but for the price of it, the accuracy just was never there. can't speak for the current ones as I would not buy another based on the accuracy of that first one. a high end rimfire just ought to shoot better.

I have on of the first 77/22 mags off the line. It is amazing how accurate it is. I also bought this September a new American and it will not even shoot half as good as the 77/22 will. Mine has the old school boat paddle stock on it. It is one of my favorite guns. I am really surprised to hear that not many people are getting great accuracy with them.

I just checked the trigger on the new Walnut 77/22 Mag, It's 78 OZ's. Sounds like it's time for a Volquartsen trigger spring and sear kit from Midway. No wonder I can't hit anything LOL

I installed the Volquartsen trigger spring and sear in the 77/17. Unbelievable the trigger went down to 24 OZ. Shot 4 groups at 50 yards with a 12X Leupold scope. The best group was 4 shots almost touching with one flier. The other 3 groups some shots almost touching but around a inch and a half overall, not so hot. It was cold like 24 degrees but no wind.

I have one of the older 77/22 stainless rifles with the boat paddle stock and green inserts in the forearm and grip. It has been a very consistent and accurate rifle. The trigger is crisp but a tad heavy. I just haven't fooled with it because the gun will consistently run 1/2" five shot groups @ 50 yards with decent ammo. Lord only knows how many hundreds of squirrels that rifle has killed.

I bought a used 77/17 .17 HMR several years ago. Many of the 5 shot 100 yard groups that I fired with then gun would give me an excellent 3 or 4 shot group with a flier opening it up somewhat. After a couple of months I bought me a Volquartsen barrel for it and that took care of my grouping problem. If the wind behaves I can usually get around 3/4" 100 yard groups with the gun. I would like better yet but I will take that.

A prairie dog at 200 yards is in grave jeopardy when I am shouldering that gun at my shooting bench. It goes with me to Wyoming every year.

I've had several 77/22 both lr and magnum, both blue and stainless, and they've all shot very well. Also seen a bunch of others and they all shot well too. The two 22lr's I had shot as well as a Rem. 541S that I also had. A couple magnums were just unreal accurate for a factory gun, by that I mean 5 rds at 50yds all holes touching or better. In '93 Ackleyman and I went to shoot prairie dogs. On the way he bought a walnut 22mag sporter at the local pawnshop. Later after zeroing I watched him put 5rds of Win 40JHP into the smallest circle of a Sinclair benchrest target - 3/8" dia - without touching the black. Each of the guns I mention had a non-threaded barrel. My current favorite 22Mag has a screw in custom heavy barrel done by a local 'smith. It's beautifully accurate. Still my opinion is that a screw in barrel is good, but also that with a Ruger it doesn't much matter and I wouldn't do it again. The Ruger dovetail system works well and with a tight receiver fit the barrel is held very securely.

I'm really diggin my 77/22mag, especially since I got my Shilen 17 HMR barrel for it. This is my 1st 17 HMR, very enjoyable. I sighted it in & doing some pest control. So far a possom & a problem coon. No running around like after 22 LR hits at times.

I also have a 77/22, still with the factory barrel.
