Ruger 96/17

I am looking at a ruger 96 in 17 hmr for general plinking. Does anyone have one? Looks like a fun little gun but I would like some insight on them before closing the deal. Also does anybody know what the going price is for one? I know the've been discontinued for a few years and wasn't able to find any current info. The one I'm looking at is being sold as used but appears to have seen very little if any use.

I don't know anyone with the 17 HMR, but a friend of mine has the 96 in 44 magnum and it's his go to deer rifle. I don't believe the accuracy is anything to get excited about, but in a short range deer gun it really doesn't matter. I haven't seen a used 96 in quite a while, so I have no idea what they're worth.

Curious whether or not you got it? I just bought one over the phone, sight unseen and am wondering how I'm going to like it. I think I bought it well enough so I can turn it over for a profit if I decide I don't want to keep it. It will probably be next week before it is actually in my hands.

I did not end up getting it. I was bidding on it on gunbroker and the price ended up higher than I was willing to go. I'm still interested in the ruger 96 in either 22 mag or 17 but prices on them are out of sight right now so I'm looking at other options. Let me know how you like yours when you get it. I've seen a few old reviews on them but I've never actually talked to someone that has one.

My son has the Ruger bolt action 17 and has been trying to get me excited about this cartridge. A friend of his needed some money and offered to sell his 96/17 for what sounded to us like a reasonable price. I like lever actions, so I told my son to go ahead and buy it and I would pay him next time we get together. He said it looked like new and is scoped with a Tasco World Class. Those are inexpensive scopes, I know, and sell from $60 to $80, depending on reticle and power. From what I read, the 22 mag is superior in killing power for larger animals out to about 100 yards, but after that the advantage goes to the 17, due to its accuracy. For smaller animals, the 17 is devastating at all ranges, according to my son. We shall see.

I have one in 22mag and i love it. I sent my trigger to TT SHOOTER and had him work his trigger magic on it. gun is picky about ammo but you will find one it likes. Go to RIMFIRE CENTRAL and you will pick up some good tips.Iam going to send my barrel out and have it reworked because it's not as accurate as those savages YET but it will be after Randy at cpc takes care of it.
