Ruger American 22 Mag?

Looking at one over the week end and curious if anyone has one or shot one? They have a rotary mag and seem pretty light weight. I can get one for $238. and tax. Seems like a good price to me. As usual, always wonder about accuracy.

Yes I have the 17hmr and the .22mag. Not shot the 17 yet but the .22 mag is a dime @ 50 and a quarter @ 100 if I do my part.
They come from the factory with 3-31/4 pound pull and wont adjust below 3 but you can pull the adjustment spring out and replace or cut about 1.5 coils off and it will give you 1-2 pound pull. Then also you can adjust it to make it heavier after changing. Factory free float and the stock is a lot stiffer than a Savage stock. Great Rifle!
Oh and at $238 that's $20 less than I paid.

I've got the .22mag carbine and love it with a 4.5x14 burris scope and CCI ammo it will stay just under 1/2" at 50yrds and rarely miss a squirrel.

I have not got to shoot my 17 yet, what ammo are you getting those groups with ??

I bought one of the compact models in 22 Mag a few months ago and at 50 yards it shoots everything I've tried in it extremely well. No complaints of any kind.

I have not got to shoot my 17 yet, what ammo are you getting those groups with ?? I am shooting the Winchester Varmint HV, that is all I have been finding at the local Wally World. I just returned from Montana and we were shooting Prairie Dogs anywhere from 30 out to about 120 yards and it worked great.

Sorry to the OP, I was not trying to turn this into a .17 HMR discussion, just trying to comment on my experience with the Ruger American.

I own the .22 mag compact version and it is a great little rifle. In fact I was shooting it some yesterday but not much as finding reasonably priced ammo seems to be impossible. Mine(and me) will hold about 1.5-2" at 100 yards with pretty much raggedy holes at 25-50 yards. However I don't have the luxury of really trying lots of different ammo. There's no real velocity loss with the short barrel either; I chronographed some rounds out of the American vs a Marlin XTM with a 22" barrel.

Why the compact version as opposed to the standard length?

I have taken many foxes over the years with a 22 Magnum using good old Winchester Super X 40 grain hollow points . Just have to make a well placed shot . The Ruger American is getting very popular among the hunters in my area . A couple of my friends have bought them in 22 magnum and like them a lot . They are very reasonably priced and well made for the money .

I bought the carbine version because it is compact and very handy-plus it doesn't give up any velocity in the real world. Here is a 3 shot group shot yesterday at 25 yds using Speer Gold Dot 40g 'short barrel' ammo. It looks promising but I didn't try it at longer range because of lack of ammo resupply.
