Ruger American. 308 or 30-06?

When I made my response previously I was not thinking in those terms, I shoot both rounds. I do think the 308 is a better matchup in this rifle but I agree if you don't have any other Big Game rifles the 30-06 would be preferred.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone. I got pulled out of town for the weekend so haven't had a chance to do anything yet.
 
I have a 25/06, minimum requirement for deer is 270 in my state, started to consider a 30-06 then found the 9.3x62mm Mauser, I know what I'm buying
