Ruger Charger Owners.. Need Help!

The barrel swap will work just fine - just do not install the Charger barrel on a 10-22 rifle. That would qualify it as a (SBR) short barreled rifle which makes it a NFA weapon. Long barrels on handguns are OK.

I know the laws.. thats why i am putting a 7.5 inch barrel on it! I do not own a normal 10/22 so i dont have to worry about any of that!!

VA Ken,
From my understanding, a 16 inch barrel is the longest barrel you can have on a pistol.. is this correct?

I don't believe there is any law stating that a PISTOL is limited to a MAXIMUM barrel length. Most 'length' laws are more concerned with restricting 'long arms' (i.e. rifles and shotguns) from being made into more easily concealable firearms.

Now if you stuck one of those GM 28in barrels on there, you would probably have one crazy looking pistol with some serious barrel droop.

PS: You do know that once you put the over-16 inch barrel on the Charger, that you can then later install it into a stock and use it as a rifle, right? You can then convert it back to a pistol when done. I know you said you read the laws but since you asked the long barrel question, I thought I would throw that out too.

NO SIR!!You CANNOT put a rifle stock on a charger receiver! it is registered with the BATFE as a PISTOL and always will be unless you go through the red tape to have its registration designation changed. just adding a longer barrel will not make putting a rifle stock on it legal.

However, how many LEO's/Wardens/ect are actually gonna look at it? I wouldnt do it cause im 1, law abiding & 2, chicken [beeep].....

BATFE Ruling 2011-4 – Pistol to a Rifle and back to a Pistol
Today, at the NFATCA Firearm Importer, Exporter and Manufacturer Conference, the BATFE announced that Acting Director Melson issued Ruling 2011-4, regarding whether a pistol can be converted to a rifle and then back to a pistol, without having to register the firearm as a short-barreled rifle. While the Ruling has not yet been published,ATF Deputy Chief Steve Albro stated that the Ruling holds that a pistol may be converted to a Title I rifle (non-SBR) and back to a pistol without having to register the firearm as a Short-Barreled Rifle under the NFA. However, if the firearm starts life as a rifle, the Ruling further holds, that it cannot be converted to a pistol without registering it as a Short-Barreled Rifle under the NFA. As soon as the Ruling is posted, I will update this posting with a copy and any additional holdings.

OP: There is no rule as to how long a barrel can be on a pistol. Ungainly yes to but an 18" tube n it but not illegal. Think of a long barreled XP100 fired from a bipod. When you start adding shoulder stocks or forward grips you run into issues legally.

Funny how few folks know the law. Once a pistol, always a pistol, as long as it never passes through the form of an SBR. It's still a pistol if you restock and rebarrel, just looks like a 26"/16" rifle temporarily.

Guys run long barrels on contenders and bolt pistols all the time. Ungainly, yes. Illegal, no.

That is true. I've even looked at doing a raw Model 7 action as a pistol in the past and then switch it later as the desire hit into a rifle.

Back in 1978 John Towle (T-N-T Arms) brought out an XP100 stock for IHMSA. It had a forward grip. Of course someone ran it through the ATF and it was ruled illegal as it was designed to be fired with a hand on the fore grip. Those came off quickly but man were they nice for those Turkeys..LOL
