Ruger M77 Mark II Sporter?

Ok guys, I was in a local gun shop the other day just browsing around. The guy that owns it and I are really good friends. I just happened to see two Ruger M77 Mark II sporter rifles leaning up near his computer, brand new. They are the laminate stock model with the stainless barrelled action. Until I bought my Savage, I only shot Remingtons. But let me tell you, when I saw this rifle, my jaw nearly dropped. It was just beautiful! He had one in .308 and one in .280 . I was almost afraid to ask him the price because of how nice these rifles looked. When I did, he said that he could do $450 for me on one. My parents said I could tell him to hold me one for christmas, but before that happens, I want to make sure they shoot 1/3 as good as they look. I will mainly be hunting Deer and maybe a few hogs with the rifle, and am leaning to the .280 since I already have a .308. He also said he could get a .243 in also.

So my question is, what caliber would yall prefer for the above targets, and do they shoot nice? I reload, and don't mind putting in as many hours as needed to find its "pet load". Thanks

I would go with the 280 (great for deer). I have m77's .243 and 7mm mag both are good shooters. The only problem is a heavy trigger, but a timney can fix that...Jason

Here's my 77mk II compact .243..This is my first Ruger centerfire and will probably buy another now.. It shoots under 1" easy with handloads. Go for it I say... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

If you are going to shoot shorter ranges the .243 with a 105 is more than
adequate. If you want to stretch out to the 400+ yards some day I would go
with the 280.

I know guys that have used 243's their whole lives for talking elk in utah they swear by them for everything elk sized and smaller

as you are in Georgia I doubt you can find many places that you can see much farther that 200yds let alone 400yds

I'm thinking of going with the .243 and using it as a calling rifle also. I already have three larger caliber centerfires sitting in the safe (.300 Savage, .308 Win, .270 Win). Still very much up for discussion though. Tell me what you guys think.

I like rugers, get a trigger job and then torque the crap out of the action screws and go hunt. my 22-250 shoots great, its my yote rifle and feels like an old catchers mit when I pick it up. it works great for calling stands where you are getting back into the truck after not shooting, its easy to pull the shell out and replace it back in the internal mag, the safety is awesome and insures that a high piece of sage or a cedar tree branch cannot set the gun off. I really like the guns for functionality, however I still feel the tikkas are the more accurate out of the box shooters but I hate clips.
