Just go a new one from a guy locally that has never been shot. Looks like a real shooter. Nice smooth bolt, great feel and has a heavy barrel. Now the rifle has what ruger calls a 2 stage target trigger. Anyone have any experience with this trigger and how would it work for stand hunting looking over clear cuts most shots within 200 yards. Also have a couple spot on power line that really reach out there around 500.

Have that rifle in both .223 and .308...don't shoot the .308 much as getting old and so is my shoulder but as to the rifles..I was very disappointed with the .223 trigger..felt like dragging your fingernails across a BRICK. I was whining at the range and another old timer, well older than me, was shooting the same rifle in .308..he said try mine..did and could not believe it was the same rifle. I said what did you have done to the trigger? His reply, "I shoot it..has been that way from the first shot".

I had a local 'smith re-do the .223 trigger..must have had an apprentice practice on it as butchered a part..I no longer use or refer others to him. Long story short, a shooting engineer friend salvaged the trigger and now great. The .308 trigger was acceptable from the box however the .223 trigger now shines.

All that to say this..these rifles shoot good, IMHO, however it would not surprise me to hear of another rough trigger from time to time.

If you're going to hunt with it, you could cancel your Gold's Gym membership..kind of heavy,IMHO, but then I am old,LOL.

how did you know i worked out at Golds!!!
Most of our hunting is done from stands so carrying isn't an issue. You really can't spot and stalk here in maine. The woods are very thick.

I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but soon. If the trigger is any issue it will head out for a new one. I like something sharp and crisp. No slop and nothing to light but not heavy either.
thanks.
Got any pics of yours?

I got one in 243, replace the trigger with a Rifle-basix because Timney did not offer one. I'm happy now and will shoot less than MOA with 55-107 grain bullets.

How old is it and what years was it made? I have a Ruger M77V in heavy barrel (.308) that was manufacturered in 1982. Back then, I took it straight to a master gunsmith who worked the trigger and got it down to around 1 lb. He also worked the action for me as well and it is extremely smooth FOR A RUGER. Now I also bought a Ruger M77 Target Grey Target last year and the action feels like it came out of a WWI Tank. The trigger was also worked (a two stage) and its' ok, but I'll eventually have it changed out. I've gotten used to the rough action and have used some Imperial Action Wax to make it better. The one thing that makes me put up with this M77 (action) is that its shoots extremely tight groups. Have fun with your newbie!

i believe its an 09 model. But its new not used. It looks just the same as the grey on rugers website only the stock is a light brown color. I have never used a 2 stage trigger. Whats that all about? Rugers page doesn't explain it at all.

thanks
