I would say that if you plan on getting the AR down the road, I think Id just buy the AR now, if that is what you really want.
Now if you really want a Mini, then by all means get it, Just have to take it for what it is, an expensive truck gun/bullet hose, the newer ones are said to be much better, but still a 1.5-2" shooter if its a good one, if not, its more like 2-3" groups.
I loved mine, I sold it to pick up some other thing that I "loved" more at the time, which is probably now down the road as well LOL.
The main thing that the ruger has over the AR is Reliability, which is IMHO pretty much a dead issue considering todays AR15 are pretty darn reliable, Ive had 2 and havent had a major hiccup with either, jamming due to a box of really crappy ammo, and just being overly dirty from "playing too much"
All this being said, Im actually saving up for another Mini, most likely a 30, since I dont have a rifle in that chambering and would like to give it a go.
Id say head over to Perfect Union forums, bunch of Mini lovers over there, then you can see what its gonna cost you to get it to shoot the way you want it.
