Ruger Mini-14

AZ Coyote,

I had the very same Mini 14 accuracy issues that you've experienced. I sold my Mini 14, saved my money and bought an AR. What an incredible difference. My new Remington R-15 gives me 100 yard sub MOA accuracy with factory soft points and all I had to do was remove the wrapper, clean it, and add a scope. I'll eventually add a better trigger--but even the trigger is pretty darn good.

I could have spent the additional money on trying to accurize my Mini, but it didn't seem prudent knowing I could get out of the box performance with an AR from any of the reputable gun makers. There are many good choices.

There's a lot of skilled guys that like working on their rifles that love the Mini 14. I personally like the easy no-fuss route to get me out predator calling / hunting.

Best regards,

Mark Healy

There seems to be a pattern in the way that people modify their Minis, like working on the trigger. How does that improve accuracy though?

Nice Mini!
What barrel you runnin there?

This was an accuracy systems build I had done about 8 years ago. The barrel is a .825 Krieger barrel. With my reloads it was a 1/2 moa rifle.

I believe Townsend Whelen was right. He wrote that, "Only accurate rifles are interesting." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Find yourself a good used bolt action .223. Practice, use it, enjoy it, kill some Coyotes with it. And save your money for that AR build.

Just MHO. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Long ago I had a mini. As someone else said with a cold barrel the first round was usually right on the money but from that point on things went downhill rapidly. It made me stay away from semi autos for almost 25 years until I first shot an AR.

Personally I wouldn’t buy another one, I like the AR better and out of the box the average AR will out shoot the average Mini. Plus but my current ARs are as reliable as that mini ever was.. plus they shoot little groups, not patterns.

I'd buy a Savage and hunt with the bolt gun until you have the cash for an AR.

Here in Western Illinois when we call coyotes in we rarely have to shoot more than 100 yards. Heck, many times our shots are only 30 yards or so and this in hunting fields, not in the timber. My mini works fine for this type of hunting. When I began hunting coyotes I learned a lot from this site and am grateful for that. To fault myself though I jumped on a bandwagon and bought a .22-250 bolt gun. It works great, but is more gun than necessary. Any .223/5.56 would have been more appropriate and much cheaper to shoot. My point is simply this, YOU DO NOT NEED AN AR TO HUNT AND KILL COYOTES. You are not uncool if you do not use an AR. Every piece of metal, every spring on a mini is American made. You cannot say that about many ARs if you research where the componants come from. Sorry for the rant, long time coming.

Not that it's really anyones business, but apparently two of you are feeling left out..... If you have read Steven's (ArizonaCoyote) recent post, you'd understand he's very enthusiastic about calling predators and even moreso, a FINE young man with a good head on his shoulders. Knowing how tough it is to afford a good rifle with a full time job, let alone still being in high school, I offered to help him build an AR (providing his parents grant permission). I happened to have an extra 20" HBAR kit on order that I would pass on to him at wholesale. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Extremely nice job, stormking....

There's a lot to the old saying that, "Curiosity killed the cat". No good deed goes unpunished on the Internet if you don't include everyone who feels that they're overly important and deserve personal attention.

Kinda' like a soap opera, huh....?

+1 on the cost of a new ranch rifle (in my area $700 - $800). For very little more you can get into an AR and have a much more accurate gun. No offense to the mini because they are fun to shoot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, the American AK reference is spot on. But if you could only have one or the other then I would go with the AR. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That is an awesome gesture, bein's you shared.

Personally I would have let the others fester, in the words of my grandmother "it's none of their beeswax". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
