Ruger No 1 rifles

dogcatcher, sorry to here your so displeased with the #1, but don't base your opinions on just one experience. As you can see most qwners are quite happy with they're #1's. There is a certain conficance you have while hunting with a SS rifle, they are shorter overall than a bolt of the same barrel lenth and caliber. They fit very well into saddle scabbards. And regardless of what your smiths told you they aren't that hard to get to shoot. My #1B would open up to 5" with just a couple cranks on the forend screw, before it was floated. Finicky they are, but crap!...hardly. As for the price, can't prove this but I read in a couple different magazines that ruger was just breaking even on them but it was they're true design, so they continue to catalog it.

I have had 3 Ruger #1s, sold two of them unfired. The third, a standard model in .220 Swift, is completely unaltered and untuned, and will shoot sub-MOA with almost anything I load.

Go figure.........

(Yeah, I realize that I was lucky with it!)

Dogcatcher like they said most of the number 1's that I have seen have awesome wood on them, I like a good looking rifle. IMO the #1 is going to be more accurate than a bolt gun also.

quarterbone...I have a new bushmaster in layaway and thats the next gun that will be coming home. The 280 you have, is it pre 87'??? What I mean is does it have the warning printed on the barrel?? Both #1's I have are older, the 25-06 is a "freedom" gun thats got "In the year of liberty..." printed on the barrel also if your 280 has that then we are going to talk....

Quackerbox, My Ruger #1 does not have the year in liberty on the barrel. I bought it used in 87. It is stamped 280 or 7mm Express/ Sturm Ruger. It was rumored to be one of the ones made with a Douglas barrel. I probably would not part with it for any price. It was the first rifle I bought with my first real job. It has been good to me but I have moved on and it has a place in my gun cabinet. My Dad and I have both killed decent bucks with it and hopefully my son will shoot one also. About 10 times a year I threaten to sell it, when I want money for a new project gun. I dont. It is the prettiest and very close to the most accurate gun I own. #1s are like VW bugs they have a loyal following. You either love them or hate them. Any information on the Proof mark you speak of would be appreciated.

quarterbone...........Sorry it took so long I forgot about this post. What sort of info are you looking for? I cant remember the exact wording without looking at the gun.
