Ruger No.1 Stainless .204

May keep the old .204 as is. If I could get that 39gr bullet(BC or .287) going at 4000fps out of my 26in barrel I'll be around -22in at 500yds (+1.5 at 100).

The 40gr Vmax has a good BC of around .270 and would drop around 24-25in at 500.

Or maybe I'll try the .20-250! The cost doesn't bother me much. I work too many hours a year to have any time to spend money on much of anything and no wife or kids yet. Quit smoking and all but quit drinking so might as well enjoy myself somehow. Ryan
 
Leaving it alone might be the best bet. The only part of Catshooter's post that I agree with, is that the barrel life will be short (but will still last decades as a part time coyote rifle). But, as much as I like the looks and handling of a #1, I really don't see them as the best platform to start a project like this on.

Then again, if the money won't hurt, and it's what YOU want, then why the heck not?

Michael, real "long range" is not what the .20-250 is about. Not for me, anyway. But, regardless of any of that, it was much-much-much trigger time in the field that got me thinking along the lines that ended up in building one in the first place. I don't think I'm bragging or making too big an assumption to say that there can't be too many guys on this board or anywhere else that have more trigger time on critters than I do. I don't see any rifle as being able to make up for actually knowing how to shoot. Indeed, to take full advantage of something like a big twenty, you need to be able to shoot at least half way decent (which is me, half way decent). And comparisons to the .204 Ruger really aren't fair - the big '250 case is a whole 'nuther class and level of performance. Just like the .22-250 is to the .222 Mag.

Honestly though, while it serves the purpose I built it for very well, that purpose is quite narrow. The .20-250 really is not something I would suggest or recommend to most. It's a specialized rig for specialized purposes.

Long range ain't my cup a tea either but I won't say that I couldn't use more trigger time. Real world ,"in the soup" as Michael said experience is what I probably need more of. Was thinking about starting a thread last week on longest streaks without missing a coyote and then I went and missed one. The streak was fun while it lasted!! I think I was at 11 or twelve. Ryan
