Ruger No. 1 Trigger Question?

My buddy just sold me his No. 1V in 223 Rem in B/W. Wow! this baby shoots, it is Varmint heavy barrel model without the top rail. BH Blue 50 gr V Max's are 1/2 @ 100. Very happy, EXCEPT, I do so love my CZ set triggers. The Ruger's trigger has been smoothed but I would like to hear from anyone with an aftermarket trigger for the No. 1.

I have seen Brownells Moyers for $53 and EABCO Kiplinger Set for about $240. Are either one or both worth a darn? Which if any do y'all like best? Would like to here from you No. 1 guys!

Mark,
I have the Kepplinger single set in my #1V 204. I really like it, so does everyone else who shoots the gun. Invariably they'll shoot it the first time then say "man I like that trigger".

I was about to order it from Brownells but my 'smith said no, let him do it. He ordered it from Brownells and installed it for less than I was going to have to pay for it. Evidently there's a heck of a difference between what Brownells charges a retail customer vs what they charge an account holding 'smith.

John, THANKS! exactly what I needed to hear! How'd the Turkey huntin' go(is going) this year? Which No. 1 do ya have? I have always LUSTED for one, but had to wait to find a shooter. Man this one does! Thanks, again! Did you get ya those 2X4 Basic workbench products?

Mark,
My 204 is the stainless/laminate KV1BB or something like that, LOL. Probably the same as your 223, medium heavy barrel, no quarter rib etc. I also have a #1B 280 and a #1B 270 Wby. All three of them shoot great. The 280 is my everyday Deer rifle and it's dispatched many Bucks.

Haven't started Turkey hunting yet this year, but it won't be long. I'll start in Ga week after next.

I wound up building a nice bench from stuff I scrounged from a local second hand store and some Ace Hardware shelving. Hvae probably $75 in it.

Mark,
I have a Moyer's on my Number 1 in 22 Hornet. I can only get it adjusted down to a 2 3/4 pound pull. I'm not happy with it. If I had it to do over again, I'd go with the Kepplinger trigger regardless of the cost.
Don

Dear BACOVA,

How is your Ruger #1 v stainless in 204 shooting??? Did you have to re-bed the forearm or install a Hicks accurizer
or did a gunsmith work the bugs out of the forearm hanger
bar system.

canjar also makes a single set trigger for a #1, was going to order one for my #1V in 22-250 but after extensive load testing and developement over a couple year period the best I could get it to shoot was 1 5/8's @ 250 yds, heck my AR's shoot better than that, so the #1 is pretty much a "back corner of the safe" occupant now.
RR

John and Gentlemen: Thank You! Exactly what I need to know. I will call my gunsmith and ask him to order me one from Brownells and install. I can hardly wait. This thing shoots.

Do y'all know, it is a OWT (Old Wives Tail) or not that the Varmints w/ scope blocks shoot better that the quarter ribs? Just for future info, I have waited and lusted so long, do not want to step of into a swamp of dislike if I do ever stumble across a quarter rib #1 for sale.

Did a search on No. 1's here, I am sure I've seen posts, and could get no matches, anyone know how?

I have shot #1's with both Moyer's and Kepplingers on them. The differences in the price pretty much reflect the differences in the quality IMHO. The Kepplinger is pricey no doubt, but excellent. I know a guy who has a Canjar on his. He told me it is better than a Moyer's, but not as good as the Kepplinger---2MG

My two 1Bs have the quarter rib Mark and they shoot fine. The bit about them not shooting as good is news to me. I read all kinds of junk about the #1 in these forums and pay absolutely no attention to it. Every one I've ever owned was a shooter. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I doubt it.

I didn't put a set trigger in either of the 1Bs and the 280 is probably the best shooter I have. Maybe I've just gotten used to the trigger, but it seems fine to me. Both of them have triggers that are much better than the trigger was in the Model 70 Coyote Lite that I kept for 6 months and then sold. That thing was awful.

I didn't sell it because of the trigger, actually I had that fixed, but I still didn't think much of the gun.

I have both the Moyers and the Kepplinger triggers on #1's. The Moyer's is ok, but isn't as light as I like them. The Kepplinger trigger is the sweetest thing I have used in a long time. You can find the Kepplinger at EABCO.com and a little pricy as 2muchgun mentioned, but it is so nice.

This may be changing the subject just a little, but does anyone know of any custom gunsmiths who specialize in rebarreling #1's for accuracy. I am aware that EABCO does, but am curious if someone else out there does. If you know of someone, please give me a personal. Thanks.

Good Shooting.

6MM, I talked to a guy at Bansners a couple years ago and he refered me to a shop in Lewes, Delaware that specialized in accurizing the #1. I swear, I can't remember the name and I had it, plus a phone number, at one time.

Something like J & B, or J & R Gunshop. You may be able to find it by Googling. Or by calling Bansner's Ultimate Rifle in Pa.

There is a Custom gunsmith in Lewis,Delaware that specializes in Ruger #1's. He does not have a website or email if you can believe it.I will post his info tonight. I spoke to him about 6 month's ago and he offers a accuracy package for $350.00 including tigger work, bedding, removing the barrel and re-cutting the chamber, aligning the quarter rib etc.

The only Custom gunsmith that specializes in Ruger #1's is Mike Riggiero of Broad Creek Rifle Works in Laurel, Delaware
His shop's phone number is 302-875-5446. I saved an article of a custom job he did for gun writer Jon Sundra from the 1999 issue of "Rifle Shooter" magizine. This guy can do a complete Ruger #1 re-build includig his own accurizer system ,replacement top bases, recessing the tang safety, and synthetic stocks. P. S. The Ruger #1 is the most expensive rifle to re-barrel due to labor costs in working with-in the single shot limitations. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif WOW, glad I passed up a # 1 for a Savage 12 LP /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
the additional $350 can be used to buy another real shooter,
a Savage /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif Does Ruger include a discount or rebate in the box for the additional after market accuracy work /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Exactly the same rebate that other manufacturers include for when their rifle gets sent off for stuff like recessing the safety and a synthetic stock. I imagine that takes a fair chunk of the $350. Although I bet that recessed safetly really adds to accuracy.

I believe there are more engraved Ruger #1's in the National Firearms Muscum than Savage's. The New Savage Rifles are the most accurate rifle made in America. The
Ruger 1 is a classic like a fine bottle of wine,an old car
and maybe even like a old model 12....that'in good company.

Smoke that in your 204...
