Ruger Security Six in .357mag - can I shoot .38 special?

My girlfriends mom has a Ruger Security Six in .357 Magnum. It belonged to her dad and when he passed away, she got it. She hasn't shot it and was wanting some ammo for it. She is only wanting to shoot it a little for fun. I tried finding a manual for it online, but haven't had any luck. I was pretty sure in most .357Mags you can also shoot .38 Special. Is this the case with this model?

Sorry, the gun is now two hours away from us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif We were just there for the weekend.

You can shoot .38 special in any .357, just don't try and shoot a .357 round in a weapon chambered for .38.

Your girlfriend will enjoy the .38 rounds more than the .357. A .357, depending on what round, can bite a little bit.

kam - I've shot a .38 special Colt snubbie and it wasn't bad at all. I haven't shot a .357 magnum, but have heard they can be a little rough.

Bob - Thanks! I did a search on Yahoo and it brought up Ruger's page, but it was for replacement parts. I went to their site and found it.

Just make sure the chambers get a good bristle-brush-and-solvent cleaning after shooting .38's. Otherwise they will build up a ring of powder fouling (black crud) just ahead of where the .38 case ends. Since it's shorter than the .357 case, enough crud buildup may interfire with properly chambering a .357 cartridge. I have seen some pretty badly neglected chambers like that.

My 4" Ruger .357 is a [beeep] cat when shooting "standard" .357 loads thru it. Honestly, I was a bit worried whne I got it but I swear it has less felt recoil than the polymer framed EEA Witness .45 that I used to have. I reload hot 180's for hunting and those still handle fairly well.

Is that pretty much universal with revolvers or does it vary from brand to brand?

The parent of the .357 was the 38 SPL the only differance between them is the 357 Mag has a 1/10" longer case. and slightly more pressure and velocity. .38 SPl will shoot in any 357 revolver, and is a great way to work someone into the magnums.
