Ruger VS Savage accuracy

Don't own a Ruger, except in a .22 handgun. So no comment on their accuracy. But I will say I love my Savages. Pretty don't get you nothing unless your a model.

I have an MK3 all weather in 308 and it is OK. IT never has a problem feeding but it is not what I call a shooter. I am thinking about getting rid of it and gettin another Rem or maybe even a Savage so I have a better shooting rifle....
Good luck with whatever you choose

I used to own a few ruger centerfire rifles. I own a few savage centerfire rifles. If that says anything. I like my ruger 10/22's and pistols, but I will never own another ruger centerfire rifle. None of them shot worth their price. Not even close. The savage rifles all shoot well for me. Others seem to get an accurate ruger, just haven't been lucky I guess, and not up to trying anymore. Don't want to knock anyone's brand, they are just not for me anymore.

The accuracy of Savages is better and the trigger is a lot better out of the box. I own a M77 Mk II in 270 and really like it, however it took alot of work on the trigger and at the loading bench to get really good accuracy. It shoots Partitions and Accubonds right at 1" with near maximum loads.

As as I'm concerned, this question is far too general for you to obtain any form of a concrete answer. I've seen both Rugers and Savages that have shot great, and some not so great. I've owned 3 Savage bolt actions and 2 Ruger bolt actions, as well as 2 Ruger no.1's. Of the 3 Savages, one shot extremely well, one shot acceptably well, and the other shot average at best for a heavy barreled rifle. Of the Rugers, one shot lights out one hole groups with handloads, 2 shot acceptably well, and one of the no.1's will shoot it's first few shots into 1/2" groups. Do I feel one brand is particularly more accurate than the other? No. It all depends on the individual rifle, it's either a shooter, or it's not. Just my opinion---2MG

Every Ruger that me or my family has owned has been very accurate, however we shoot nothing but handloads. I do not have a lot of experience (as of yet) with savages but the ones I have seen have been accurate. The savages come with a better trigger and a slight bedding edge with pillar bedding and free floating vs Rugers angle bolt (which is good) and pressure point. I think accuracy is equal. Get the rifle or caliber that you like better.

I was just reading a post on another forum where 2 guys tried shooting long distance for the first time. They were hitting steel targets at 500 and then 600yds, both with Ruger rifles---2MG

I would have to agree on the Savage as it has the better trigger to start with. Have shot lots of Rugers over the years and have not seen any that were consistent for accuracy. However, hunting accuracy is way different than the type of accuracy I expect from a rifle. They are a nice looking product but just don't have the confidence in them.

2MG, how big were the steel targets they were shooting? A 24"x24" retangle is way different than a PD at 5 or 600 yds.

Steve--had to go back and read the post. They said they were hitting clay pigeons at 300yds and 24" steel gongs 3-4" from center at 600yds. Was just trying to make the point that there are plenty of Rugers out there that shoot well.---2MG

Having owned more Rugers than I care to admit 2 .22 hornets, 6mm rem. .25-06, .270 and .30-06. Most of them didn't shoot groups.....they shot paterns. With re-crowning some barrels, fire lapping and paying close attenting when seating the recoil lug in the stock I was able to get acceptable accuracy from them for the most part. I have a Ruger #3 in a .22 Hornet that has been a tack driver since day one the 77/22 hornet was a lost cause. I have an old savage 340A in a .22 hornet that is again a tack driver. Somebody here made the comment about"shoots good for a hornet" I have never quite understood this as I have experienced nothing but exceptional accuracy from the hornet accept in the case of the one ruger, but thats not the cartridges fault. If you are not a handloader for the hornet I can see the accuracy issue, but with a little effort prepping cases and selecting bullets in the 35 to 50 grain range. You can get some pretty impressive groups. Most of the "Hornet" style bullets don't shoot as well as some of the other's. Early Hornets had a .223 dia. bore where the new hornets have a .224 dia bore. This could be where some folks have run into the accuracy issues with the hornet, also.

As sad as it is to admit, cause I've loved Ruger's for years, they just don't seem to be the "shooter's" right out of the box.
Yes, I handload alot, and it is a necessity (I think) when you buy one of them. I've always said that Ruger has the best "fit & finish" of any of the commercial offerings out there. And right up next to the Weatherby rifle's, (sometimes better) I stick by that.
I'd be willing to say that based on a group of ten guns of the same caliber, from various manufacturer's, 7 or 8 of the Remington's would be good shooters, maybe 6 to 7 of the Savage's might, and maybe 5 of the Ruger's would.

For the price, it just takes so much more effort to get them to shoot well, and it doesn't appear worth the effort for the cash doled out.

I've got a Remington VSSF that I had the muzzle recrowned "Savage style", and it's a shooter/keeper. I sold and traded off my other rifles that I wasn't using, except for the sentimental ones, and now shoot many of my Encore barrels.
I'm looking at getting a Savage Sierra in .243 for some coyote shooting.....(yep, Sleddog you're giving the .221FB another try, so I'll go your way a little...LOL)
and we'll see how it does with that AccuTrigger.

Just my 2..........

Take care,
Bob

The most consistently accurate Hornets I've personally seen are those made by Anschutz. If I were a big Hornet fan, which I'm not(usually go with 223 or 22mag) I'd probably own one---2MG

I own 1 Savage, a HB 223 that is very accurate. I've shot two others, a 223 combo gun and an old 7 mag that are "decently accurate", all three have been glass bedded and were shooting handloads. I own 3 Ruger sporters and load for two more. .223 stainless all weather, 22-250 Standard rifle, 250-3000 tang saftey, and two 257 Roberts Standard rifles. All are in the 1" class or better, all have been bedded and the triggers worked on( a 20 minute job). The 22-250 Standard rifle is easily the most accurate rifle I've ever shot. The two 257 Roberts are a bit finicky, but with the right loads are MOA. I'm not sure at this time whether my next one will be another Ruger or a Savage. For some reason I tend to think of Savages as Varminters and Rugers a hunting rifles.
