Ruined the finish on my BCG

So I put my BCG in my sonic cleaner and I used the RCBS solution and apparently it was a bad idea so what is a good place to get it coated and what type of coating?

That's just a spikes phosphate bcg, right? What's the relative cost of a re-phosphate vs. just replacing it? $140 part at JoeBob's if the bolt is shot too.

Is this really a degradation of the finish, or is it something deposited ON the finish?

It's a 6.8 bolt and carrier the bolt looks the same way I soaked it in oil for almost 24 hours now and it still has that rust color I have a spare 6.8 BCG. I found a local company that is going to microslik it for $50

Did the same thing to mine not as bad but still discolored it I oiled it up good and its shooting just fine. After that none of my new bolts carriers are going into a sonic cleaner. Lesson learned the hard way I guess.

sure worth a call, i had an issue with a part (puller collet) recently that was damaged, called and spoke with them, no problme sir, whats the part number, where did the damage happen, yup, we'll get one shipping ASAP for you.

obivously not even close to the same issue as you're having, but great customer service is still great customer service!

So.... what in the devil happened? How did an ultrasonic cleaner ruin the BCG? I've been told by one guy that any AR owner should have one of these cleaners, I know he put his BCG through his ultrasonic cleaner and loved it so much I don't want to know what else he cleaned in there.

Whats the science behind this and why are some BCG just fine?

I have found there is a mixture for brass and then there is a mixture for blued steel and other types of metals. I also use an oil with my sonic cleaner.

Definitely a case of using brass cleaning solution rather than gun part cleaning solution. Been using a Hornady ultra-sonic cleaner for over one year for cleaning BCGs, charging handles, and complete lowers without a degradation of the parts.

Thanks for the heads up! I have a ultrasonic cleaner, and I not that impressed at how it cleans brass..and then you have to rinse and dry cases...
Sad thing is I gave my old great tumbler away!!

Yeah Im thinking about getting a thumbler tumbler and getting rid of the ultrasonic and clean my BCG the old way. Yeah the ultra sonic works ok on brass only reason I got it was I had a gift certificate from work to burn.
