Running and gunning for a double

After seeing nothing on the 1st set, I packed up and left about 8:30 and moved to the high point between the two fields behind a weeded dirt berm. With the moon being 86% being backlit was an issue however, with all the miscellaneous equipment and stuff sitting around the barn the RZR and I were just more stuff in the muddled affair. The field to the East had several deer spread throughout the extended 1000+ yards I could see, and one particular deer just kept calling and wouldn’t be quiet. That deer just kept hollering and I couldn’t bring myself to leave, I figured at some point a coyote would hear and couldn’t resist an investigation.

Sure enough as I was scanning I turned hard to the West and here come 2 coyotes. The tall weeds on the berm were obscuring my view so I moved my tripod to accommodate a shot.

The 1st coyote stopped and I squeezed one off and the 204 found home as the coyote danced the circle of death. The 2nd coyote lit off South westerly behind the berm; quickly I moved the tripod to the other end of the berm to get a shot. The 2nd coyote stopped and meandered around in the field for a couple minutes and then I squeezed off a couple more rounds. I thought I had missed and then I seen 2nd coyote stumbling.

As I watched the 2nd coyote for several minutes I noticed he was headed towards my house, ummm, could I get lucky on another shot?

Quickly I threw everything in the RZR scooted home, parked, grabbed my rifle and got into my elevated stand behind the shop. As I was scanning, sure enough, there he was!

I grabbed my rifle off the wooden bench, pulled the bolt back and chambered another round, if the noise runs him off so be it, I gotta try.

As I knelt down on one knee coyote #2 came into view, and I tried to settle in with my heart about to jump out of my chest, squeezed the trigger, and the 204 found home once again.

This run and gun hunt had to be one of the most unorthodox hunts I’ve done but, get er done, and make it happen!
