Running Coyote Shot Tips

Hey all...looking for some tips on how you shoot at running coyotes.
We have had a couple of SMART dogs that decided it would be best to never break stride when coming into the call.

Pretty sure that a few of these are some "educated" dogs from last year...whoops

Anyway, please share some tips on how you do it!

Thanks

If they are running in and over the call (fly bye) try a shotgun. If they aren't that close, practic...practice...practice.
Shooting running jack rabbits is a good place to start.
Personally I just dont shoot at them if they are running. YEAH RIGHT! OK, I try not to.

Decide how much lead you think you need then double it. OK so maybe that's an exaggeration but you get my drift, in general it takes much more lead than one might think. A fast cartridge helps, but it really just takes a lot of practice.

With a broadside, get the cross hairs on the front of his shoulder, and swing with the animal, and keep swinging as you fire the shot. Amount of lead varies with the distance to the target. If he's less than fifty yards away, I would only lead by inches, but you must keep the swing moving as you fire. Follow through.

For a shot angling away, which is common, you don't need as much lead. You have to really focus on AIMING, not just throwing lead. Take the time to actually get on the animal. Gain experience by doing it. Running rabbits are perfect, as previously mentioned.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

If they're running in to your calling they can well be young not so smart dogs.Let them keep coming in.If they're heading around to check the wind play it as best you can depending on terrain/cover but shoot before they get down wind.

+1 on the shotgun once you have let them get close. If they are swing down wind on you, change sounds or mouth howl/bark at them. Unless you have been pegged, they will often stop to see where that other dog is. You will need to be on them or quick. Once they see you, they will kick it into light speed if they haven't received your special delivery.

This is a very good rule of thumb, if you have a coyote traveling full value, left to right, @ approximately 30mph @ 100yds using a projo that is going roughly 3600 fps, it's going to be about a 3.9ft lead which will get it done.
