running coyotes with dogs

The guy that started this thread, 5th post down on the first page says he wishs hound hunting in his state would be banned. Turn in the treaspassers but don't blame the rest of us or try and end our sport. I don't say I'm going to try or wish to end yours when you sneak in on my land with out permission. Just get the permission. Everyone needs to read this thread and understand how important it is to secure permission and act responsibly. Just because you think it's ok to do something others may not. You have to think before you act and do something stupid. But don't try and ban a sport because you don't like it or a few don't act the way you think they should.

I dont hunt with hounds,I dont call anymore,But I still take more coyotes than 90% of the guys bitching on here, and not with traps or snares although some years I do trap and I have hunted with hounds All I will say is you come here with your bickering friends to hunt we will run your sorry a$$ off, and not for a stupid reason of hunting methods.I have talked with a few wardens and most will tell you that compaints are mostly spawned by jealousy,Think about that! We have dog hunters, callers, groundpounders, pickup hunters, even a few poachers with big lights and starlight scopes. And we still got coyotes,So get off your computer and hunt that should help. This post is not directed to any individual so dont come whining that Im flaming you.

They aren't armed, and I am, so I collect them and place them in the back of the truck, along with their 4 dead dogs. I finish my trap lines, and by this time...it is pretty cold in the back of that truck. Right or wrong, they are taken to the Sheriff's office. The are booked on a complaint of trespass, as they have been previously warned by a deputy.

Let me get this right... You killed 4 dogs for trespassing on your property? You rounded up people at gunpoint and put them in the back of your truck while you checked traps? Does anyone else hear the themesong from the movie "Deliverance" here??????

Around here, that's a good way to get killed. How did you know one of them wasn't armed? Pulling a gun on someone for trespassing is NOT legally OK around here. It will send YOU to jail. Killing dogs around here unless they are causing damage to person or property is NOT ok around here. It will send you to jail.

I can't believe you weren't criminally charged for that behavior. I can't believe that judge dismissed charges. In fact, I'm not sure I believe your story! If it's true, all I can say is WOW!

Would you send me the GPS coordinates for your land so I don't end up making a mistake by trespassing on your property? If I'm carrying concealed and someone pulls a gun on me, I'm going to assume that he's going to shoot me. If I can, I'm going to shoot first.

J. Holly, I've always respected your posts here and think you are a good guy. This one was just so over the top for me that I couldn't believe it!!!

As for the dog debate. It's a classic. Some like it, some don't. Some are foolish enough to say things like it shouldn't be legal. We'll, if we don't stand together we will fall, one sport at a time. Wake up people, put your differences aside and stand together!! Look around. If you lose the tunnel-vision you'll see what is happening around the country and you'll see it's only a matter of time until you loose what you love to do.

Well said randy. i dont like gun hunters for deer, how sporting can that be if you see it its dead. gun hunters don't like bowhunters to many wounded animals they take all the bucks during rut how sporting can that be. maybe we should outlaw all deer hunting. AS RANDY SAID STICK TOGETHER AND FIGHT THE ANTIS NOT EACH OTHER!
CRACKER
NO SPORTINGLY ABOUT IT!

Mr. Holly,

I am a trapper and you have just dealt a blow to trapping with the same force you were trying with hound hunters. I can only hope the story you related above was a fabrication or simply a daydream put to words. Maybe someone else has your password.

I have caught a few dogs. Don't like it, but I certainly don't kill them. Real easy to release if you know how. I also know the physical conditioning necessary to run a 100 traps, not to speak of 400.

Randy

I want people to understand that my views are simple. I don't care what people do on their own property, or what is legally done on public property. If you want to run dogs, then do so with permission.

If a person runs dogs, can they please explain to me how they are hunting? I mean, are they actually hunting the animal? No, the dogs are. Are they hunting where the animals actually are? Maybe, but it is really hard to do when driving across a pasture or quickly down a road. As I have stated before, I have never hunted with a dog, (other than a coon, rabbits or birds). I don't see how animals such as coyotes, lions, bear or deer can be sportingly hunted using dogs.

I was exposed to using dogs for lions out in Arizona. I had never thought about doing it this way. Again, I have never participated in hunting of these types of animals this way. While I can rationalize lion hunting with dogs as nothing more than a big coon, I don't think my conscious would allow it for me.

Remember, their are vast differences in way of life between the states, and backgrounds.

While we are on the subject of trappers and dogs I believe the following story out of Missouri would be of interest...If those had been my dogs payback would have been a b***h.

Dog Owner Upset When Trapper Shoots Mastiffs
Trapper Shoots 2 Dogs Found In Trap

POSTED: 7:05 pm CST February 7, 2005
UPDATED: 7:48 pm CST February 7, 2005

CASS COUNTY, Mo. -- Two dogs were shot at close range in Cass County, and officials said the shooter did nothing wrong.

Dispatchers received a call Monday morning from a panicked woman who said her dogs were trapped, then shot and killed.

Marcela Egea found her two English Mastiffs dead by a creek near her house, located near Highway 71.

The dogs were stuck in traps set up by a man working to catch beavers and otters.

The Belton man said he found the family pets agitated and, in his opinion, acting aggressively. He shot the dogs several times each.

"It hurts, it really hurts because to know that somebody put traps out close to your home and gets away with it, and that something like that can happen," Egea told KMBC's Emily Aylward.

Sheriff's deputies told Egea they couldn't do anything because trapping is legal.

The trapper told KMBC he shot the dogs as a business decision, saying he doesn't have time to notify people every time a pet gets caught.

"If people are going to trap, that's their own life, their own way," Egea said. "But don't do it around an area where there's animals, people, houses and lives."

Trappers who are registered with the Missouri Department of Conservation are protected from animal cruelty laws if they follow the rules.

Egea said she believes the trapper might have broken two of those rules.

In-fighting based on Ethics..............not good boys, not good at all.

Ethics are ethics, everyones will be a little different. But as long as they are good honest hunters I will never call thier ethics wrong. I may not agree with them or choose to partake in that activity, but I would never say they should be banned from hunting a cetain way. Thats a very ignorant response.

We should not take the moral high ground holding our EHTICS in higher standing than that of other who chose to hunt using a different method. You may find yourself fishing a lot more than before.

I only hunted coyote with dogs one time in NY. It was a blast I managed 3 coyotes of 4 that I shot at in 3 days. Shooting running coyotes is not as easy as people would think. The dogs never caught or cornered the yotes. We had to constenly pick up the dogs when they got to the roads. The real fun was hunting with the dogs not shooting the coyotes.

J. Holly, went HUNTING today with my hounds. We ran 6 different coyotes and only got one. Not hunting???? If the rest of you guys think its so easy with hounds try doing it sometime, my back side is draging tonight. Not to mention my feet and legs, so I'm a little out of shape. It's not easy doing this. And it's a lot harder trying to teach a hound to chase a coyote than any of you (unless you have done it) would ever think. Randy, you post is right on the money.

My brother owns 240 acres in Kansas and his only gripe with the dog huntng coyotes was the drivers of the trucks, they were very inconsiderate because they would follow their dogs right through his fences knocking them down and he would call me to come help him round up his cattle cause the coyote hunters took his fence out again. He had to finally line his fence rows with boulders that were so big it took a D9 caterpillar to get them there. He doesnt have that problem any more! I know its not all dog runners only a hand full but that makes it bad for all. Jimmy P.S. I have since moved to Wisconsin 6 years ago.

Thats my gripe and the complaint of the OP, 1dahunter. I've hunted with hounds, will do it again and will probably get some of my own before too long. Buy then again, I'm only sticking to my own place and, WITH PERMISSION AND RESPECT FOR THEIR PROPERTY, my immediate neighbors. I wish I could say that I'm shocked that someone would just drive thru a fence, but I've patched a lot of fence in the past and I'm sure I've got a lot more ahead of me to fix from idiots driving through them. I can understand and overlook an accident but when its on purpose, that really puts me in an unfriendly mood.

If a person runs dogs, can they please explain to me how they are hunting? I mean, are they actually hunting the animal? No, the dogs are.?

Really?

Really?

Have you ever hunted pheasants? Do you use a dog? It applies here just like it does with birds?
Humans use dogs to hunt with.

How can you attack the use of dogs for any kind of hunting if you use anything more than a home made bow and arrow combo or a spear? If you use a scope you have an unfair advantage. A rifle gives you an unfair advantage.

WOW

Folks if your on this website then most of you kill predators. However you get it done.Questions you need to ask yourselves are.How far do I want to push the hunting yotes with dogs. Then how far do I want the next person to push bear and lion hunting with dogs. Then how about rifle hunting big game animals. All of us on here love some type of hunting.Give the anti's a little ammo and they'll build it into a nuclear bomb. You know what helped ban trapping in arizona. They had a picture of a squirrel in a #3 foothold trap, and played it over and over.I don't need to judge how some other hunter decides how he wants to legally hunt his game. But I will tell you even though I might not have a problem with a pack of dogs on a yote, there are people out there dying to get pictures like that on the 6 pm news.THere are more of them than us and we better start using our heads for something besides starting conflicts among ourselves. The peta and humane society people have an agenda, must we make it so easy for them.First trapping, then hunting, then fishing, laugh if you want. But I can see what direction society is heading.take care, daveyboy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As I have stated before, I have never hunted with a dog, (other than a coon, rabbits or birds). I don't see how animals such as coyotes, lions, bear or deer can be sportingly hunted using dogs.
What is the diffrence between the coon, rabits or birds and coyotes, lions, bears or deer????

I'm thinking a shorthair on point and a hound bailling(sp) are quite pretty in there owners eyes.

Tony

PS Nice post daveyboy.

That's the damndest story I've heard in awhile. As a Missouri LEO I have to say that's just plain wrong. There is criminal action in that case. I'm not going to get bogged down in this entire thing other than to say evidently those deputies who took that report were either totally simply incompetent, or brain dead. I would think that the complaintant would have other recourse through the county Prosecuting Attorney or a civil law suite. Any way I look that over that is shabby at best and pure smelly BS at worst. Pitiful....

I didnt have a best ever season this year,I think Ill blame the callers for screwen up my sets at night with there god awful screamin. Then those daytime gun hunters that chase them coyotes into brush piles and culverts so far it takes em a week to find there way out!Dog hunters your not off the hook either I want all them coyotes for me,And while your given em up Ill take the deer pheasants and turkeys too.Keep this Bs up and you wont have to rely on Peta or any other Anti group to nail your right or privlege to do what you do. Really I cant believe Im even following this thread.I would like to know how you knew it was hound hunters running your fences down though> Could be your neighbor dosent like you or who knows.
