Running wolves with hounds?

Some of you guys are equating the ineffectiveness of your dogs as to the prowess of the varmit. An 85lb dog that wails for his mother from ANY red fox has just shown you what he/she really is....a rank coward. Predators are just that.....predators, doesnt mean they can fight worth a lick.

NorWester,
A tad agressive,eh.

You assume to much, LOL!. Hmmmm, put your hand [All your finger's]that is. In the mouth of a dying canine. Dying, as in his last "death grip". See...who wails then.

Come on Kirby, Im not getting aggressive....just speaking the truth. Ive seen 3 little working terriers stretch a 30 lb coyote. The yote didnt really impress me. Not to paint them all with that brush but when the dog has a big weight advantage he should take care of the business. If he cant then its cause he is afraid to, not because the yote is a world beater.

Norwester,

There are many "truths", as you well know. My point is what I stated. "One dog & one coyote, first on-scene".

Put just one [w/o back-up]of your "working Terriers" on the hind end of a coyote. Then see what happens.

----------

Now getting back to your origional post. I'd like to hear how your dogs, do on a wolf. I'll be waiting to read of your hunt.

Want to thin your dog kennel out. Put them on a grey wolf track. You won't have to worry about feeding them any more. One of our dogs was on a coyote track, switched to a wolf. We watched the wolf run out of the woods and go about 1/2 mile and then sit down to see what all the noise was about. Here comes the hound. Alone. The wolf stood up and waited. The hound slowed down, then really slowed down, took a look and realized this is no coyote. Turned around and went back in the woods and found the coyote track again. Wolf just walked away. Another time 3 hounds didn't come back. Found all three with the tracking collars. All tore up bad. Big vet bill. Two never ran again. Run hounds on wolves?? No way.

My great grandfather was a Govt trapper here in Mt he had a pair of wolfhounds he used on wolves and coyotes,my grandfather tels me they were the meanest damn dogs ever born.

Trailhound,

You see many wolves up your way?

I suppose the 2-singles that I've seen, came down from Minn. I've only seen two down here in central Iowa. I believe there are others though. Mostly single nomads, have been seen/reported in Iowa. From what I've heard, up in NE, Iowa for instance.

Around 15yrs ago, one was shot or hit by a car?[I don't recall], just West of me 10-miles. My Dad, knew the farmer.

If a pack, should ever establish down here. I don't believe it would go unnoticed for very long ie;[small 1-sq mile land sections & alot of wide open cropland].

They are truely a rare & awesome sight to behold[for me anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif]. Especially, because Iowa, doesn't have any /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Roger that, Nonya.

I'd like to tag one. Frankly, I'll have to check the regs. Some yrs back I believe, they were non-huntable[protected] in Iowa.

I've posted previously awhile back on "coydogs". Don't know what some of those canines were, I've seen. Neither looked 100% wolf, nor coyote. I have "speculated" on those "coydogs" that I've seen of their heritage.

Although two of those canines, looked [all] wolf to us.

I'm still looking /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Cool pic's.

Whats wrong with that coyote's Left hind leg? Looks to be broken or dislocated. As it's R.O.M is out of kilter. No follow-up pics after the last pic?

I wasn't on your hunt. But I'll talk of what I see. If that coyote was either not injured or not exhausted, or was not "pinned" in that brush pile...ie; Out in the open. Your lone hound woulda had a face full of teeth. Grabbing him by the rump.

Nothing against your hound, as it takes "grit" to grab a coyote, regardless. That can still fight, IMHO.
----------------
I've seen a boatload of hound/coyote battles. A coyote fighting for his life against one hound "first on scene".

Unless the coyote is immediately grabbed by the throat. Will get in some chomping time of his own.

Obviously there's a [BIG] difference. Between the fight in a fresh coyote & one thats been pressed hard or injured.

We all have our opinions, eh.

Kirby if you can see the yotes face it is bloody and the Hounds clean. The fight all started in the setting of the field face to face the yote took off when we started to get closer to it. It deciding to jump into the brush, the only thing to broke on the yote was his back leg when the hound hammered him.

MN Hunter,

Rather than beating this horse anymore. I'm moving on. But, before I go....Your pics & comments, leave me with more follow-up questions & comments. No big whoop.

Good hunting to ya

many moons ago I did a bit of wolf hunting in N.W. alaska. There the people had lots of sled dogs. As the winter would wain on the wolves would get a bit hungry. They would send in a [beeep] in heat into the villages & she would lure dogs away to the worl pack, which would kill and eat them. I learned quite a bit about wolves there, & I sure wouldn't send one of my dogs out after one. Incidently I did manage to kill was i still the worlds record world. Skull was 19 3/16" while we didn't have a scale it took 2 of us to lift him into the super cub. We nailed him nose to the ceiling of an 8' high shed and his tail was on the floor.

Anyone who doesn't think the right kind of hound will quickly dispatch a coyote obviously hasn't been around the right kind of hound! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

One of the most famous hound packs of the west was that of the Sun River Hound Club in Montana...Started by the stockmen of Sun River this pack was made up of greyhounds and deer hounds...In the season of 1886 146 wolves were killed by this pack.

A hunter using 11 "running hounds" near Great Falls,Montana in the early fall and winter of 1929-1930 killed 162 coyotes in 68 days...In seven years this hunter killed a total of 660 coyotes.

just wonderin all you guys talkin bout runnin wolves with hounds, sounds possible if you got some good trailhounds and some good gritty longdogs to run em down, though im bettin it would be a good idea to have a pitbull mix somewhere in there for a kill dogs, but is it legal anywhere to run wolves with dogs i cant think of anywhere it is, though i dont know so if there is please let me know would like to have a go at it

my dogs were breed to hunt wolves ,coyote ,hair it was said that the grand duke of russia had a wolfhound that could take a wolf by its self i dont think they could now the lines are long gone but it could be brought back into the breed
