Im going to try oiling the bolt assembly and see if it helps. The safety on this mod 70 will not move. Its in the fire position. I can work the bolt to where its ready to fire but safety still wont move. Anyone familiar with the mod 70 bolt. I would like to dissasemble the bolt but dont want things(parts) to go flying.I would like to shoot it this coming weekend . Ant help?

No it will not work at all. I can move it about 1/4 in and thats it. It is in the fire position.I could shoot it but dont liks the safety not working. I may be able to get the bolt apart but concerned about getting it back together. At least its shootable as is.

Can we assume the bolt is together correctly, that little 'pin' towards the rear is in the 'slot'. No one took it apart recently? Is this a new gun? Used & new to you?

BTW, there is a somewhat known problem with many model 70s from the Lockhaven(I think) plant before they closed, I have one. My safety worked, but was very stiff, especially going from fire back to safe. I worried I would break it off.

I ended up sending the barreled action to a gunsmith in N WI named Lee. I forget his last name, big at 24hourcampfireforums. It came back much better but still stiffer than my butter smooth mid 70s model 70.

The gun is new.It still has the glue on the trigger adjust screw.I dont know why anyone would have taken it apart(bolt) I mean.

IME, this is normal of Mod 70 safeties. Everyone I have had to the 'Smith they have "fixed". They just need smoothed out a bit. Something about the detentes. Any knowledgeable 'smith should be able to fix that safety.

Not a lube problem, crappy machining problem. My BIL had one like that, sold it cause it just never was right. My older 70 s model was a whole lot better.

it is probbly binding on the detent that is between possition 1 fire and safe unlock possition 2. somhow it will need to come apart and get smothed up. could be binding on the cocking piece. either way needs to come apart. if its new you should make win fix it..
