Safety on or off

First yote I shot heard the safety flip off at 85 yards, stopped dead in it's tracks. Still died but lesson learned.
 
Always safety on until I see a target that I can kill.
To me, I'd rather lose a chance at an animal than risk killing a person if I forget to put the safety on, on a 2 or 3# trigger. I've been hunting with people that had hair-trigger rifles go off when slung over their shoulder.

Makes total sense and I would do/expect the same if hunting in a group. Like many here, I always hunt solo and never even see another human.

That can be attributed to negligence or ignorance. I only have a select few people I hunt with for that reason. Theres guys i tried hunting with who scared the [beeep] out of me with how they handled their rifles. Had one guy put a hole in his floor board the first trip out and never hunted with him again. I have 2 or 3 guys I hunt with that I trust because I've hunted with them enough to know they aren't incompetent reckless idiots.
 
Safety on until im at the very least, tracking one in the scope. I've yet to find a safety i cannot move to off quietly. Dont just poke at it, ride it all the way to fire with your thumb or finger.
 
Safety goes off when we start the stand. A safety is mechanical device that can and will fail. The only safety is the booger hook off the bang switch and the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. When the stand ends and we go to break down the safeties go on, and the muzzles go in a safe direction away from others, whether up or down.

I don’t chamber a round until I’m sitting on a stand. Then safety is on until I’m ready to shoot. Who the [beeep] cares if flipping the safety “might” spook a Coyote. There will always be more Coyotes. It only takes one accident to change yours and somebody else’s life forever. To me it’s a no brainer..... And I wouldn’t even hunt with someone that did have those bad habits.

Safety on. I’m far to forgetful to put it back on after 20 minutes of calling. It was just hammered into me when I was a kid never to take it off unless I’m gonna shoot. Can’t change that habit now.
 
Having a coyote hearing the safety click and stopping for a second to take a look or barking at him to stop him for a shot.. What reason would there be to have the safety off other than preference when on stand?? Dan
 
I guess when I'm using my Ruger it's not completely on safe. I've goofed up before using that rifle and instead of completely pushing it all the way forward I only pushed it half way between safe and fire. Which as I'm sure most know you can work the bolt when you do that but you can't pull the trigger. I got into the habit of having it half way while on stand so I could just hit it with my thumb and it'd be off safe.

98% of the time the safety being on hasn't done anything in the coyotes favor. I've only had one as mentioned that I thought heard the safety come off. Of course that's only speculation. I forgot to ask it why it ran away. More than likely I'll never know.

And I wouldn't hunt with someone that wants to chamber the round while on stand. I am not out there to spook and educate the coyotes. Leaving the safety on is OK but it better have a round in the chamber before you get on stand. Accidents happen because people don't pay attention. Most happen when someone is loading or unloading and pulls the trigger. If someone is so unsure of their abilities with a loaded firearm then I don't want them with me. It is called trigger control and you should be able to do it without a safety engaged.

Agreed at this point gun is pointed in a safe direction.
 
Safety on until I have coyote in my scope. I had a buddy I used to dove hunt with that didn't use his safety in the dove field once he got set up. He had his muzzle pointed straight up and while reaching down to get more shells out of his bag his hand hit the trigger and blew his hat off his head. 2 or 3 more inches and it would have been lights out. I've never messed up a stand from a coyote hearing my safety.
