Sage rats with the 17HMR

I probably should have called first, but I went over and Bi-Mart in Ontario was sold out. Didn't have time to run over to Weiser to check there. Is there a way to get the weekly ad emailed so I can have a heads up? Even their regular price on the 17's is better than Cabela's or anywhere else around here.

Do you have the membership card? I get the ad in my newspaper but, about once a month they mail out a coupon sale book to members. They get their ammo shipments on weds. and fri. Doesn't always come in on every shipment though. When it does they're usually sold out by the time I get there. Makes me think someone has some inside info.

I picked up the membership card when I was there. I saw that their ad comes out on Wednesdays so I'll just have to keep an eye on it and try to pick some up when I see the sale. But you could be right and someone has some inside information on the sale and picks it all up before anyone else.

It sounds like they are building a store in Emmett as well. My mom and sister live over there so I can have them pick stuff up for me from time to time.

What are you guys using for scope rings? These tasco rings are junk, my scope keeps sliding forward due to the recoil. I'm thinking a set with a stop pin would be best to keep it from moving.

Recoil are we still talking 17 HMR? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif On my Sako I used a 3/8 to Weaver adapter then used the basic Weaver rings. Never had a problem good luck.

I know, I use the term loosely when talking 17HMR. By the time I shoot 150-200 rounds it's about to fall off as it's slid all the way forward. Maybe that's the best thing to do, go from the 3/8 to weaver....

I haven't warmed to the 17 HMR yet, although I own 3 of them... a Marlin Heavy Barrel, a NEF and a Ruger 77/17 Heavy Barrel...

My main prejudice toward it, has been ammo price and lack of red mist...

However since Speer/CCi has started loading the 20 grain TNT and the 17 grain XTP for Hornady, they give me a load more red mist it seems than the 17 grain V Max...

Also that has been something to motivate me more on its 'bigger capabilities' has been the 20 grain FMJ bullets now available...coyote sized stuff is now more reliably taken...haven't done it, more would I need to try it under normal circumstances, but a head shot on a deer with the FMJ, I bet would be lethal...( you never know with the economy and the world situation, if we might have to rely on survival situations in the future..)

The last thing that has added to my enthusiasm for the Ruger especially, is the availability of a Shooter's Ridge 25 round, double stack magazine.. which sells for $19.00...

it is half the protrusion of the regular 25 round banana clip mags used on 10/22s.. I picked up two... but you can load up the full box of 50 rounds in the two magazines..

Wish money was no object, I'd love to have about 4 of them, with a 100 rounds total and all the 17 HMR ammo I could find, and use it as a walking varminter... stopping every 100 rounds to reload the 4 mags and get back out shooting..

with that set up, I'd bet going thru a 1000 rounds in an afternoon with the Ruger in 17 HMR wouldn't be all that hard...and sure would be a boat load of fun...

I shoot a couple of 17 hmr's. A CZ 452 and a Cooper LVT. They both are extremely accurate. I do miss getting the red mist common with centerfire though. But for just just putting meals on the ground for the turkey vultures the 17 hmr is tough to beat out to 175 yards. Don't think I would want the ammo bill for a semi-auto though.

Went out to the end of Elmore Road with the 17 HMR 77/17 and the 223 Remington model 7 Predator and set up with mounds at the 100 yard range and 225 yard range. I didn't have to move in 3 hours of shooting. I went through 100 rounds of 223 and close to 200 rounds of 17 HMR. Both guns were absolutely destructive!

Light winds and good shooting. Still lots of whistlepigs to shoot out there. Being a Monday morning (11 May) there was NO ONE there.

Got home just in time to receive my ER Shaw 17 Mach 2 barrel and all I need is my scope and I am ready to go!

They are definitely plentiful this year. Shot a brick of 22 and 200 rounds of 17 on Saturday and my brother shot about the same. Hours of entertainment, that's for sure.

That is why I am going with a 17 Mach 2 for the closer shooting. I was able to get 3000 rounds for less than $6 a box delivered. Out to 115 yards you will get a flat shooting gun at half the cost of HMR. Can't reach out with the Mach 2 like the HMR and the cost is still more than 22 cal for sure, but it is close in cost to the hotter shooting 22's (Stingers are selling for about that price or more now) and you can't find them for sale.

I will pair up with my 17 HMR and be good out to 175 yards.

Besides, I am always in the mood for a new gun. I can't wait for my scope to get here so I can get out next week and give a full exercise while the little buggers are still active. The cool weather for the rest of this week will keep them up, but next week it looks like it might start to turn hot.

wow, you guys down there pay the same amount for 17hmr ammo as us. I figured it would be cheaper down there since everything else is lol. Its usually 13$ for 50, I grabbed 10 boxes of Remington 17g vmax at Bass pro last fall for $10.99 a box. On my last box now I think.

Seafire, are you refering to the 25 rds mags for the H and WMR rounds? I would like to know how they work out for you. I haven't heard alot about them.
