Sako 75 varmint

I am considering the purchase of a Sako 75 varmint ss laminated. I got to fondle one at the gunshop the other day and I must say I liked it. However the asking price of $1700. did put me off.
The trigger was sweet, you set it by pushing it ahead then touching it off. Another downer is that if I purchase this rifle the first thing I have to do is cut the stock down. Oh yeah the chambering I was looking at is 22-250. I am still trying to decide if it is worth it.
C'mon guys talk me in or out LOL.

Best to ya

I have both, and the sako is the better rifle, the set trigger is non standard by the way, so at the price , its a good buy i would say.

I'd get the Sako. If it's too spendy the Tikka's are good. The only mistake I made buying a pricey gun was a Weatherby, that won't happen again.

Yup, gotta love those tikka's, I have a tikka T3 lite in .308 and I like it a lot. The only thing that turns me off on the sako and tikka is the detachable magazine. Guess I am old school because my opinion is the only guns that need detachable mags are gas guns.
This opinion stems from the day I went to the range to try some loads and realized my magazine was at home in the safe. The cost of new magazines in unreal also.
Magazine isue aside I really like that sako.
Best to ya,

Robert,
Two points: First, the $1700 price you got is pretty steep. A brief check in the GunsAmerica listings found listings from $1200-$1500 for the same rifle, NIB in various calibers. Second, I have several Remington 700's and three Sako Deluxe 75's. I like and shoot both brands, but the Rem's are nowhere near the quality of the Sako's. I firmly believe you get what you pay for when buying rifles. Ten years from now you won't regret spending the extra money for a really good rifle, and you'll still be enjoying the benefits of a high quality firearm. I follow the same philosophy regarding scopes, binoculars, and rifles. Buy the best you can afford, and don't look back.

Get the Sako 75, little remmy is not in the same class.

I dunno but for $1700 bones I would pass. For that kind of dough you could buy anything in the Cooper line-up except for the Western Classic or the Varmint Extreme (VE is close but a little over) If you pick any other in the Cooper line you would save enough to pick some extra options; LOP comes to mind right off the bat. The only thing you give up is a magazine, that might be a show stopper for you, but; IMHO that the Cooper will not only outclass, outshoot, and out re-sell the Sako 75 that you are looking at you'll get the sense of pride that comes from a rifle that you picked the specifications on.

My .02

BTW: I own a Tikka Custom Deluxe .243, a Sako Finbear .270, and a Cooper LVT in .17 HMR. That's not patting myself on the back, many own much nicer, it's only to give legitamcy to my response.

Thanks John, I have never conducted an online transaction. I will look into it and if I can save a couple of hundred bucks I may line up an FFL to recieve. Guess it's time to move into the 21st century LOL.

Blaze thats food for thought, I have never held a cooper before, I may have to research them before I buy. I like the 3 locking lugs on the Sako, is the cooper the same lock up? Are the triggers on the cooper as nice as the sako?

I owned a sako forester 25+ years ago and regret selling it, some deals are hard to pass up though.

Anyway thanks for the responses time to do some more homework.

Best to ya,
Robert

Hey Robert, just thought I'd mention the Sako 75's are being replaced with the 85's if that influences your decision. Also means when they are gone that's it. I love doing things on the net but with guns I'm extra cautious. Ask for specific pic's. The good thing about buying local is you can see exactly what you get, wood grain, fit, is the barrel straight in the stock. Some guns actually weigh up to 1/2 lb more with a different cut of wood, we saw this comparing two Sako 75's at the local shop. I passed on a Sako 75 Hunter 30-06 for just over $600 because it was plain jane boring wood, should have purchased it. Another brand that rarely gets mention is the Sig Sauer. A beautiful well made gun that performs, just a little more money. Good Luck http://ableammo.com/catalog/product_info...oducts_id=34915 http://www.impactguns.com/store/sako.html

Here you go, This is the link to their homepage they have information on each of their actions. Also if you plug "Cooper Firearms" into google you can find a wealth of information on them including some write up's from various publications as well as other things.

The Cooper has the best trigger out of the three rifles mentioned. I have a Jewel Trigger in custom Rem. 700 and some very nice triggers on custom air rifles to compare it with, while not the finest trigger I own, the Cooper trigger is no slouch, it's an excellent trigger by any standard.

It's your rifle, but if I were going to spend that kind of money I would at least look into the Cooper and see what you think.
