Sav-A-Lot stores?

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on the Grocery store chain Sav-A-Lot?

From what their website states, there are only about 1300 stores nationally.
So, I don't even know if any members here have any of these stores in their area.

Anyway, the reason I am asking...They are opening a store here in Salina, later this Spring.
It is going into a renovated old Dillons {Kroger} store location, that was closed 2 years ago.

Once open, this new Sav-A-Lot will be much closer to my house, than any other current grocery store...(although still much smaller).
Just curious as to whether their claim of "up to 40% cheaper prices" is accurate or just a bunch of hooey.

I spend a lot of time in grocery stories for work.. Sav a lots are a cross between a Sams Club and an Aldi store.. If memory serves me correct they pretty much only sell their own private label brands.. While better then grocery shopping in the local Dollar General they are no H*E*B...

A bunch of very no-name stuff. Quality is good. They sell a lot of crap, too. But plenty available to build quality and nutritious meals.

We go there once a month and FILL a cart for never more than $130...Sam's Club the other trip for the month...That cart is a little more...

We have two of their stores in our town (E Central FL)..One is fairly small and has a very limited variety of choices of basic items, the other is larger and has a relatively bigger selection..

On a limited budget, it's a nice choice for things that may not be carried by Aldis or if you don't want to buy bulk from Sams Club (35 miles away)...Certainly less expensive than Publix or Winn-Dixie...

I have a friend that owns three of them. He is a good guy, great family and they are very active and generous in our community. We give them our business when we can.

Thanks for the replies.
Sounds like I'll at least give the new store a look, once it's open.
If for no other reason, then it's closer than any other store.

On most items, I'm not "picky" about brands, as long as it's decent quality food, and good price.
Living on a strict, monthly food budget always has me looking for the best deals.

Being single, I don't buy in bulk, except for things such as Puffs & toilet paper.
So, I haven't had a Sam's membership for over a decade.
When Aldi's opened a store here back in the late-'90s, I shopped there for a while. But, (@ least in the local store) the prices got to be as high as elsewhere. Plus, I got tired of them having only one register open, with a line that sometimes backed up halfway across the store.

So, for the past decade, I have always bought my groceries either at 1 of 3 Dillons/(Kroger) stores...or at Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart & 2 of the Dillons stores are on the complete other end of town, from where I live (about 16 miles round-trip). The third Dillons is closer, but still halfway across town.
Maybe I'm just too much of a complainer. hahahahaha

Anyway, thanks again for the replies.

Just an FYI..take your own bags or be prepared to buy some. That is one way they keep prices down. There are boxes available to put your stuff in, but I prefer the reusable shopping bags.

Thanks for the heads up.
While I do have several of those reusable cloth shopping bags (from Wal-Mart), I don't always remember to take them with me. Hahahaha

We have gotten in the habit of just leaving them in the vehicle. Thats the only way we remember.

One thing I forgot is the fresh meats. They are pretty dang good and pretty reasonable. And they are always having $1 and $2 off sales. And I have got $3.99/lb Ribeyes and $4.99/lb T-Bone steaks. Breakfast sausage for $2/lb and some great deals in the fliers...

They are franchised stores, the stores can vary as much as the owners. Personally I would rather starve than set foot in our local store. They need to upgrade the place, work on keeping it clean and train their employees. I have seen cleaner places in border towns across the river.

Our Save-A-Lot changed to an ALP's (Always Low Prices),they are pretty good and prices on most products are a lot cheaper and still great products. Our Company packages a lot of the Dry Goods,Cake Flour and Cereal's for many Generic Brands so Your helping out Us hard Workers in Missouri & Illinios by buying products actually made in the USA!
