Savage .17 HMR

Alright So I grabbed a .17 on the weekend I picked up the Savage 93R17BVTHSS or whatever the acronyms are. Basically a bolt action .17HMR with a thumb through laminate stock in S.S. I figure since I could not find a review on the site. I would start one!

The firearm Arrived in excellent condition, and the stock looks awesome! Barrel has a great shine, and came with pre mounted weaver bases. So far so good. I got my Elite 4200 2.5x10 x40 scope bore sighted and off I was.

The Savage AccuTrigger is going to take a little of time to get used to. I feel like I have to strech my finger to get around the trigger. Perhaps I have grown lazy. The cool thing is that Savage send you the "trigger adjustment tool" to increase/decrease the adjustment on the trigger spring. This si super easy. remove the action/barrel from the stock (4 screws) and voila the trigger group is revealed and all you have to do is turn the sring itself clockwise/counter-clockwise to increase/decrease trigger weight (1.5 lbs to 5.5).

List the items on the firearm

Elite 4200 scope
Harris Bipod
trigger set to 1.5 pounds

Well off to the range to see what she does. I'll post pics of the targets later.

Pretty much all the .17 HMR's will shoot 1 MOA or better with the ammo they prefer. My CZ452 Varmint will do just over 1/2 MOA at 50 yards for three shot groups. Haven't shot it at 100 yet.

They do tend to be particular on ammo preference, with the nod going to the 17 grain Hornady ammo, for most shooters. Some guns may prefer other loads, but that particular load seems to be the one which most guns like.

All three major .17 HMR producers, Marlin, Savage and CZ get very good reviews for accuracy, with little to set them apart except for the triggers and fit and finish.

I have the savage 93 with a heavy ss barrel and synthetic stock and boy can it shoot! Even my wife, who has very little experience shooting guns, can pop rockchucks in the head at 150-200 yds.

This is the first group I shot out of the gun. I've only tried the 20 gr XTPs but they work for me and I like the better penetration.

I bought my son a savage .17HMR for christmas and he loves it. It shoots the CCI 17 gr speer tnt's the best about 3/4" at 100 yds.

I have a marlin 917v that I bought a few months ago and I am very pleased with it. It can shoot better than I can /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I didnt care for the trigger much so I did a little modifying and got it to where it feels a little better. I also shortend the barrel to 16 inches, I figured if your gonna have a little gun you may as well have a little gun and I work in a metal shop so it was pretty easy. It seems to preffer the hornady bullets, while my buddy has a savage and it likes the fedrall bullets.

I think my friend has the same gun, and I am simply amazed at the accuracy he's getting, about 3/4 groups at 100 yds. Good luck with your shooting, and we'll need pictures!!

Im thinking of picking up one now that all the hype is wearing off. Something to plink squirrels and crows and maybe the close woodchuck and fox. I like CZ but for the price I'll probably go with a Marlin or Savage. I'll save the extra money for my centerfires.

I have a marlin 917v that was originaly a wally world cheap one that I put a RB trigger in and put a revival stock on it, It likes the tnt's best and then the come in close behind in what little ive been able to shoot it.

Hi All! First time post. I just bought a Savage model 93R17FXP. It was a combo with a Simmons 3X9-40 scope. I added a bipod to it and it shoots great. I had pennies lined up at 50 yards, and was able to take them all out. I've been using Winchester Supreme V-Max 17 grain bullets and they are great out of this combo. The area I live in doesn't require extremely long shots, so I usually don't shoot over 100 yards. This rifle/bullet combination only has about a 1/2 inch variance up to 125 yards. I really love this gun. I didn't go with the Accu-Trigger for the same reasons you said at first. It felt a little awkward, and bulky. Anyway, great site! Good hunting!

I'm grabbing the Savage "gv" in a couple weeks when it goes on sale (50.00 off usually). The GV is the basic version, wood stock and heavy barrel. Excellent little rifle. Mine will be used for crow more than anything else.

Doesnt look like this caliber is going to slow down in sales much. I remember all the wet blanket nay-sayers 5yrs ago. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
