I've been looking for a .17HMR for short distance yotes(100-150yrds). I'm going to hunt a local GMA and you can anly use rimfire and shotgun with pellets.
I found a Savage, used, for $259. It has a custom stock, bull barrel, very nice, with scope mount bases. Savage has a simular gun on thier web sight, Model 93r17gv, for $238.
Is this gun worth $259 or should I offer them about $230????
Here is the gun from the savage sight.

Use the Hornady 17 HMR with 20 gr XTP and keep your shots under 100 yards and you should do alright. Keep the shots in the head or behind the shoulder . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Cost on the Savage is 173.50 to your dealer. So you can go from there.

The hmr is about a worthless POS for a coyote rifle. You HMR fans should stick to shooting cans and squirrels. You all have no idea about shooting coyotes at 100+ yards. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif Dang squirrel poppers!

I have the 93 Bull Barrel and love it and drives tacks with the Hornady .20 xtp's. The Savage has a good rep shooting the .20 over the .17 grainers which is great for our hogs.

The price seems a high for that Rifle

Are you talking "used" without the Accu-Trigger?
If so, I'd say only pay $150 to $175 tops - custom stock or not.

Personally, I'd rather see you go looking for a .22 Mag.....

I believe this is the same rifle a friend just bought this past fall. Nice gun BUT the trigger SUCKS. LOTS of creep and hard pull. I don't believe Savage offers this rifle with it's Accu-Trigger.

I have the same gun with the rifle basix sear from Midway. An absolute tack driver and way more fun to shoot than any 22. Pretty volatile on critters under 100 yards. Blows a healthy hole in squirrels too. I only use mine for plinking. Should sell it but my gun case isn't nearly full yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

They now offer it for 2006 with the Accu-Trigger

Why is it that every time someone says .17hmr... someone has to pop their two cents about how it is a coyote round.

You can shoot deer and kill them with a .22lr. DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD!

I already have a Marlin .22 MAG. It shoots good. I was just thinking of the .17HMR for a little more range.
Is the .17HMR not that much better than the .22 MAG?

That is way too much for a used Savage. But the Savages do shoot very well. The .22Mag has alot more bullet choices and heavier weights which amounts to more ft/lbs of energy. Both do about the same in the wind, but the HMR is much flatter and tends to be much more accurate. I have killed a yote with a .17HMR and haven't killed one with my .22Mag, but would take my mag over the HMR. At 100yds or under, a .22mag is plenty accurate and has more energy. Now, if we were talking about PD's or whistle pigs than I would say HMR all the way! Just my 2 cents

I have one just like that but with accu-trigger. I paid just under $200 for mine new. It is a great gun I love it. I wouldn't buy that one. You could find a new with accu-trigger for less. It will kill a coyote with good shot placement. Try to keep it under 100yds. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The only advantage of the 17hmr over the 22mag is the ballisitcs of the round itself. It will shoot flatter by design and is a very accurate rimfire.

While I have killed coyotes as dead as they can be with the 17hmr. I use Hollow points 20 gr by choice and 17gr is I am out of the other and can't locate any 20s.

I prefer larger rifles but I to am limited to rimfire and shotgun. I don't have the range I need from a shotgun to hunt my areas that I like to make stands.

I really don't care if people here don't approve of me using the 17hmr on yotes. I have made it work and will continue to have success with it due to the restrictions and the terrain that I hunt. I assure you when I need an accurate gun that I rarely miss with, it is my hmr. My 22mag stays in the gun safe. I haven't shot it since I got the 17hmr.

The gun price you mentioned is pretty high. I would look else where for the rifle if you are set on it.

I don't have a 17 HMR but have a few friends that have shot coyotes with them and it kilt them dead, the shots were 100 yards and less though. If you are limited to rimfire the 17 HMR is a good choice

Madhunter,

Get a new one with acu-trigger. Just got mine and it was the best trigger out of the box I have ever seen. The least expensive rifle I have purchased in over 20 years and the first that did not need trigger work.

I just ordered one through a local sporting goods store, it was a bull barreled mark 2, it came from jerry's, it was advertised as having an accutrigger, it didn't.
I had a smith stone the surfaces and change the spring now its not to bad, also www.savageshooters.com sells aftermarket adjustable triggers and stocks for them.
