Savage .17HMR with bull barrel ?????????

Here is my 2 cents....I own the exact rifle only mine has the Accu trigger. It is a nice trigger to say the least. The rifle shoots very accurately. Thats about all the good things I have to say about it though.....The 17 HMR is VERY affected by wind drift. The killing power is marginal at best on "large birds" so I can only imagine what it is like on coyotes or foxes.I have tried both the 17 and 20 grain loads also. I also have a Ruger 77/22 Mag. that shoots just as accurate as the 17 but kills animals WAY better, is not affected by wind drift as bad and in shooting the 33 grain Accu-tip Remington bullets, the trajectory is VERY close to the HMR but with WAY more arse behind it.THe 33 grain accutip load has a muzzle velocity of like 2100 fps. vs the 2550 of the HMR so it the velocity is close but the 22 mag is twice the weight so you have more downrange energy. I have killed several yotes and more foxes than I can count with a 22 mag. over the years and they simply work. If you HAVE to use a rimfire the 22 mag is hands down the best choice, especially with the 33 grain accutip rounds and if not get a REAL predator rifle in 223 or 22-250.

Which rings are the best for that Savage 17 HMR. I know the weavers fit OK but looking for something a little more solid in a matte finish.

I have a Marlin 917ss with a Rifle Basix trigger. That being said I think the Savage in question is too high. I love my 17 HMR but think it is too light for coyotes. Sure it will kill em but I like to see better results. 22 mag. would be better but even then probably should keep your shots pretty close, at least under 100 yds. JMO. Have you tried the cci maxi mag +v 22 mags? Little lighter bullet and faster because of it. They shoot real well out of my single six.

Personally, I'd rather see you go looking for a .22 Mag.....

Definitely better for killing yotes at closer distances /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif.

Thanks for the info guys!!!!!!!!!!
I've decided to stick with my Marlin .22 MAG for the GMA hunting.
I put a new BSA 3-9x40 on my Rem. .223 and the one off the .223(Simons 3-9x32) on the .22 MAG.
Now It's back to the range for sighting in and practice. Hitting the yotes again Sun. morning. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Very wise and ethical choice! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif
See! You aren't such a "mad" hunter after all! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I had that exact same rifle and sold it.

It starting stringing. The poor fit birch stock that was supposed to be floated was jamming the barrel on one side and would swell in humidity. It was never even fitted just milled and jammed in there.

I removed the stock. Relieved it with dowels, hand fitting, etc. and coated all unfinished wood with tung oil as it was never sealed.

The trigger was junk. I changed the spring and shims and took it down to 3 pounds. It was better but still sloppy. There was other lousy workmanship but I won't bore you any more.

At times it would shoot some 5 shot 1/2" groups at 100 with a high power scope and zero wind. But, it averaged about 1" in reality.

I would get a synthetic stock with the accu-trigger or a CZ.

Personally, I think the mag is better for hunting than the hummer. Frankly, I am about done with all rim mags and prefer a good ole 22 lr with 40 grains. They still kill varmints, fox & coon to 50 yards as well as the hummer did at 100 (I only gained 50 with the mags, just use a center fire) and they are much cheaper to practice with and plink.

I like 22 lr's better. For the price of a mag rim. I would suggest to someone to just buy a Stevans 200 or H & R in .223 cheap ammo, more range, etc. And keep a 22lr Marlin in the closet with a inexpensive fixed 4x32 on it sighted at 50.
