Savage .204 barrels

Hey guys

I'm thinking about putting a new barrel on my Savage M12 in .204 Ruger. The factory barrel just aint what it used to be and that's OK- it's just time for a new one.

I just wondered what kind of barrel those of you have swapped to (don't have to be a Savage action) in .204 and how well you are liking it. I am likely going to another ER Shaw barrel as the three that I have in .223 AI, .223, and 221 Furball are real shooters.

Just those that are using an aftermarket .204 Ruger barrel are the ones that need to reply as that is the only caliber I'm concerned with at this time.

Thanks for all replies!

Rusty- I built a Savage with a CBI barrel. Price was good, quality was extremely good and accuracy was excellent. As you probably already know, Pac-Nor has Savage pre-fits that are excellent also but slightly higher. Today, choices are endless.

I have ER shaws from midwayusa and a McGowan fron Jim at NSS. My next will be a CBI from Jim.
All are sub zero shooters with my handloads and are as perfect as you will get, not a chatter mark in them, sharp rifling, very smooth bores, very litlle copper fouling with anyof them VS the stock Savage bbls..
All clean up fast w/wipeout.

CBI are my choice. they are button rifled then sent to kreiger and hand lapped to perfection!

100 yards 6.5x47mm lapua deer load - 129 SST over 39.5 grain H4350. Single hole at 3o'clock was a sighter 5 shots in group. group to right was from load work up.

I put a Hart barrel on my Savage 110 in .204 Ruger about three or four months ago. Bought it here on PM used. I am impressed with the grouping I got out of the barrel. Dont have my log book here with me but I think I was getting about a .5" group at 100 yds with hand loads. A Shaw barrel would be nice to.

Good luck on your search...

Preshate the inputs, guys. I am not trying to make a match gun out of this rifle but if I have a varmint rifle that will not shoot 5 shots into a half inch at 100 yards this ol' boy aint happy. I would rather hit 1 ground squirrel at 450 yards than I would 450 ground squirrels at 1 yard. My .220 Swift will do it and my .223 AI is pretty good for it to. Even got one further than that last spring with my .17 Remington (very lucky shot) so I know that it can be done.

I guess no matter what, I am looking at $300 and up for a good barrel and that's OK because a gun that wont shoot is as useless as a beautiful wife that wont.......eh, you get the picture.

CBI looks like it may be getting some of my money here soon. Either them or back to Shaw and I aint had a bad one of them yet.

Ive got a CBI in 204 it will shoot under 1/2" at 100 if I do my part. I have not had it on paper past 100 but everything I have shot at with it has been DRT longest was a groundhog at 320. Now if I just get some yotes in the crosshairs. You will not be disappointed in the CBI barrels I think Jim at NSS listed a price change effective the first of the year but anything ordered before then will be a current prices.

Another vote for the CBI barrels. I've got one in 6BR that is incredible accurate and is very easy to clean. Got another one coming soon in 220 Swift.
