Savage .243 vs. Mossberg .270

Im looking to buy a coyote/deer gun. It will be used just as much if not more for coyote than deer. I have no interest in the fur damage since last year our coyote's went for $3 for an adult coyote with no damage. They aren't worth messing with and many have poor fur here anyway.

I looked at a remington 700 adl .243 and a savage .243 but what really impressed me was a .270 mossberg ATR 100 rifle.

I like the stock best, it feels the best, Its the least expensive. I kinda really wanted a .243 but the mossberg is only available in .270 or 30-06.

When I compare the ballistics for a .270 100gr. PSP and a .243 80gr. PSP the .270 is very close in flatness.

Any advise? Anyone here ever shoot the Mossberg ATR?

I was looking into getting the ATR, but i decided to wait till next year or so. It's a "new" rifle and there is always the chance of some bugs popping up. Waiting a bit gives mossberg a chance to fix them (if there are any) and i can avoid any recall hassles.

For deer and coyote i would go with the 270. Among others, I have a couple of 30.06's and a 270 in my collection. The 270 is a neat cartridge. The Ballistic coefficient of the 27 cal bullets (100-130gr)is better then the 30 cal bullets in the same gr's. Around 150 gr they start to equal but the 27 cal has just a bit better B.C. The ATR's are going cheap, buy both..The total would be a bit more then 1 BDL. That's one option if you can't decide.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I know nothing about the two rifles..... But.....

For many years, a Ruger M-77 in .243 was my do-it-all rifle. I used it to take many coyote, several deer and a Canadian black bear. I always used 85 grain loads on deer and coyote but moved up to 100 for the bear hunt.

I know one Conservation Agent who uses a .243 for elk when he goes home to Colorado.

Mild recoil and readily available loads add to it's appeal.

I think it's one of the very most versatile rounds out there!

me!

With the .243 as far as Coyotes go, dead is dead. For deer the .270 has more knock down energy.
If your comparing the manufactures, The ATR is a bit like the Savage Stevens line.

why not pick up a stevens 200 for $255

I agree. Some of the Bass Pro shops had them for $199 a while back, and the Stevens comes in almost every commercial caliber currently made, and in long and short action. And if you change your mind some day, you can re-barrel the Stevens yourself in about 30 minutes, in almost any caliber.

Well, I think Im gonna get the .243. Is the savage with the accu-trigger gonna be pretty accurate. How about range, what kinda range could I drop a yote?

I am also considering the Remington 700ADL, but it is alot higher and I like the savage better.

Since they're the same gun, except for the trigger, the Savage and Stevens shoot about the same. I'd expect both of them to shoot under 1" @ 100 when they're broken in. As for the range, that's kind of hard to answer. How well do you shoot? If you hit it in the vitals out to 400 yards, i can't imagine it not going down.

I agree with JNClement..... The .243 will take them down as far out as you can hit them! It's excellent ballistics will help there, too!

Excellent Choice! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The savage accutrigger takes a little getting used to but they are far superior to the old trigger , like the one on the stevens. You can adjust the yourself very easily. And Savage has the reputation of having some of the best barrels out there.

Where I coyote hunt at their are fields as far as 800 yards across. However, 400, maybe a little more will probably be my max. I guess if I can afford to shoot dozens of boxes of shells, I could get pretty good with it. I may look into reloading my own. Looks like the savage .243 it is.
