Savage .308 win accuracy problems

Your barrel nuts not loose is it? How about the muzzle? It's got to something small, have you looked down the bore to check rifling? Did you buy it new or new to you? I'd say break the barrel nut loose and re headspace it. Nothing else should do that in a factory gun
 
Well your getting a lot of good ideas anyway, yes i use more than a dollar as well, thats just a good starting place.

The last savage i had that did the same thing had been bedded as well but had not been torqued down to specs when bedded and the bottom of the recoil lug was simply resting on the bedding material. It was only a 1/16" but was enough to cause it to float rather than seat in the channel.

You can check by using a caliber to check the distance from the bottom of the bolt to the bottom of the recoil lug and then check from the bedding to the bottom lug indentation in the bedding.

If they aren't the same it's floating there and shifting when fired.

I had a 270 that shot similar, slightly better than the OP's. I pulled the barrel, and put an Adams and Bennet barrel in 7mm-08 on it. Still fouls pretty bad, but shoots about 1.5" groups. I wouldn't be afraid to hunt with it here.
 
The Savage is pillar bedded on tupperware from the factory. Re-bedding the action should help significantly. You should follow the other suggestions on removing copper fouling. I further recommend lapping your bore with JB Bore Paste, followed bu JB Bore Shine. Lapping your scope rings to ensure that your scope is stress free and true to the bore is another good practice. No reason that you shouldn't be able to shoot sub MOA with a Savage barrel.
 
Well I removed the copper from the barrel(hardly any there) and used a business card on the barrel and it clears fine. Not a gunsmith so not sure if theres anything else I can do. I will get to the range in the next couple of days to try again. If this didnt help then I guess I will get in touch with Savage.
 
Take a box of premium match ammo with you. If it shoots good, or decent, then you might know its ammo related not firearm. Fed GMM,Black Hills Match, Hornady Match???
 
I'm not sure if others have mentioned it but make sure your tang is floated as well. I have owned quite a few savages and have never had one shoot quite that bad. If you are positive your scope and mount set-up is solid, I would call savage. I am sure they will take care of you. Good luck.
 
I saw that it was suggested that you try a different scope, but haven't seen that you have tried a different scope. It may seem expensive or a waste of money to go buy another scope just to try even if your scope that you have now turns out to be fine with no problems, but if your scope is bad then buying a new scope that is good would save you countless hours of headache and plenty of money in ammo. That would be one of the very first things to try. You would be amazed at how bad some scopes are brand new, and sometimes can just "die" all of a sudden. I have had it happen.

I picked up a used .308 that had quite a bit of custom work done and went to the range with some Federal Gold Medal competition ammo that I knew shot well and had installed a scope that I had used on another rifle, but had sitting on the shelf..I couldn't get the rifle to group worth a darn, with the good ammo...

I pulled the scope, went to Wally World and bought one of those cheap Center Point scopes for $65 that was really made for an air rifle (air rifles are extremely hard on standard scopes) and have had no problem since..Now, I have to justify a better quality scope for the future...The good ones that I have are already set on other rifles and I don't want to disturb them...
 
O.T, you might look at the t.a.g line on centerpoints site. I got one of their t.a.g 3-12x44 scopes as a gift and it works very well. (it is a etched glass i.r. as well).

It went on a .243 and the bdc lines up correctly for 1-2-300yds, haven't been able to go further yet with it.

Wally had them on line for about $110 a while back. and they do have a no questions asked warranty. blue

I still have not had a chance to go to the range. Hopefully next week works. I am going to try another scope on my rifle. I'll keep you all informed. Thanks for the input.
 
Just got back from the range. I tried another scope on my rifle and had the same results. 4"-6" groups is as good as it will shoot. I tried some 150gr and some 180gr. I dont think there is anything else I can do. I guess I will contact Savage and see about sending it in. Hopefully they can fix it for me.
