Savage 7mm-08 Twist

I was planning on buying my 13 year old nephew a Savage Package Youth model in 7mm-08. I was ready to pull the trigger,

, when I noticed that the 22" barrel has a 1:11.5 twist rate.

What gives?

All the twist rate/caliber/bullet charts I've seen show this as not fast enough to stabilize a 140gn head for this caliber.

I realize that the 120-130gn loads are great for this caliber but figured the 140gn would be the best all-round for deer, black bear, and the occasional moose that we see where we hunt in NY and Maine.

My bud's 7mm-08 shoots 140's very consistent and tight with a 1:10 twist and really led to my interest. I've seen him take many deer that look like they've been pole-axed when hit.

Thats been a major complaint about Savages in 7mm-08.
The 1/11.5 twist is the last twist rate anyone wants in that cal., they have lost a lot of sales over that mistake.
Savage is aware of the calls & complaints on that problem.
This has been a hot topic on the Savage site as well.
My own Savage 7mm-08 has the 1/9.25" twist which plants the 120g to 140g bullets into small holes at the range.

I went with a Ruger 7mm-08 for that very reason. I would have gone for a Remington, but there was a sale, and the Ruger was stainless.

I'm sure they did their research or have a sound reason for this twist but it makes me apprehensive over this purchase. Maybe I'll just get the Stevens and get the Savage trigger afterward. Or maybe the new Marlin line. Anyone have any pros/cons on the XS7 rifles?

XS7/XL7, way better trigger standard, barrel is like the savage & can be removed & swapped out & even has the same thread pitch & bbl nut size, stiffer stock, less cost, smoother bolt. Thats the one Id go with & have on order.
You could look at the Savage M200 as its in a 1/9.5" twist, but may be to big.

Just a Heads Up Savage Took It apon Them selfs To Change The Twst On all Of There 7mm08 Savage and Stevens 200 I Bought One and Savage Did Not Care , This Is what They Said We Have Not changed Are webs site or Catalog Yet all Of Them are 1 11 1/2 They also said It was For The winchester 140 gr silvertip . So Much For a Good Little Gun yuk yuk

I just bought a savage 7-08 with the 1:11 twist. I am going to try to work up loads for it this weekend with 139gr loads. Shoot me a PM after Saturday, and I will let you know how it shot. According to JBM this twist will do well with most hunting style bullets, and it is the match bullets that you will run into problems with.

Mine shoots anything between 120 and 140 well. My two favorites are the Nosler 120 BT, which has a very thick jacket and is great on deer, and the 139 Hornady. My best results have been with Ramshot Big Game.

No issues shooting the 139gr SST's out of the Stevens 200 my buddy has. New stock, bedding, and some trigger work it shoots very well.
