Savage 93 17 HMR Missfires???

Just picked up a new Savage 93 in 17HMR when sighting it in I had a few misfires, it was really cold out around 12 degrees. So when I got home I degrease the bolt and re oiled in with Rem oil, the lock time still seems a little slow? And still have a problem with misfires.

Anyone have any similar problems? Any Ideas? Is there any aftermarket bolt spring kits (stronger) for faster lock times?

Thanks!

Check the angle on your rimfire firing pin...Some are either straight across or angled to strike on the outside of the rim...This will account for some misfires due to the primer not being totally crushed efficiently.

If you pull the firing pin and make sure the angle on the striking portion is angled to the point that the pin strikes the inside edge of the primer, rather than straight across or the outside edge, you will get more consistent ignitions..

Being a new weapon, the surfaces on the fire control group may be a little rough from the factory... and may need to just wear into each other... They can be taken out and slicked up if you are really careful...or time (an shooting) will take care of most of it..

Have had a few feed problems, usually happens when the bolt is not operated quickly & deliberately. Never had any misfires, it was cold here a couple of weeks ago, around 0 to 5 in the mornings, it fired fine.

Hope it works out for you, mine is a tack driver!

I have had the same problem. I was told to try different ammo. It is a lot better now. I have about 400 rounds through it. I had trouble with CCI and now shoot remigton. I have only had it do it once in the last 100 shots. It could have been the ammo or just smoother because of firing. have patience and see if it gets better. If not send it in to savage.

I've run several 100 rounds through mine and have never had a misfire. I have had 2 or 3 cases that didn't extract, never had a failure to feed though. I've never shot anything other than CCI or Hornady in mine.

had the same exact problem with mine wouldnt shoot the first round but i would then extract the misfired round and it would shoot the next four rounds, i dunno if it was the ammo or not it was the first time i had used winchesters, i usually use hornady.

I guess the question I should have asked is...Is case getting indented like it's supposed to? If there is not a good strike, then I'd say bad firing pin/bolt, have savage replace it. If they are getting good hits, then bad ammo.

I have been using the Hornady ammo, It is accurate I have used my friends son Savage I sighted in for him and that has several hundred rounds through his 0 misfires.

It is not striking hard enough to crush the rim to ignite the primer. I have several rounds I reworked the bolt and they fired the second time and you can see the two different firring pin strikes on the case.

The lock time looks slow like the bolt shroud is dragging as it drops?

I am debating on whether to take the bolt apart and try polishing it up with some jewelers rouge or sending it back to Savage?

Your kidding right?

My Savage 93r17 worked fine for the first almost 2000 rounds. Then I was up shooting Belding ground squirrels, and it started miss-firing.http://www.predatormastersforums.com/forums/images/icons/default/cursing.gif It continued to get worse. I cleaned the bolt with carb cleaned, lubed it, but it still would fire. My buddy tried the miss fired shells in his left hand 93, and they fired every time. This morning I removed the bolt again, put on my glasses, and discovered damage to the bolt where the trigger hits the bolt. It's worn enough from keeping the firing pin from making enough contact to fire the shell. I'll contact Savage tomorrow.

My 93 17 has the same mark on the bolt. I don't think it would have anything to do with the misfiring. That is where the bolt contacts the trigger to keep the bolt from coming out when cycling it. When you pull the trigger with the bolt open the bolt can come out past the trigger and be removed.

When the bolt is locked in place to fire that dinged up spot is forward of the trigger and shouldn't be affecting anything from what I can tell.

I'd look closer at the firing pin itself. Maybe the pin is worn or damaged. I can take a close-up photo of mine if it would help at all. Let me know.

Havent jad any misfires with mine....until i staryed using winchesters version of the vMax....idk if its just me but i think they are terrible quality...i will stick to my cci tnt hollows...not a single misfire with them at all. Cases werent struck any diff. Between the 2 brands either...
