Savage 93 .22 mag

I have heard of feeding issues and quality issues with the magazines for the savage 93's. Have they done anything to fix this? I'm seriously considering one, but I'm leery now. I have heard a simple drop on the ground ruins the magazines.

I also have a 93 in 17HMR. Have never had a problem with the magazines. The mags are the same for both the 22WMR and 17HMR.

Hope this helps!

while i'm on the topic of .22 mags......is a 1:16 rate of twist good for the heavier 40-50 grain bullets. Specifically the federal 50's and the cci game point 40's?

Thanks

I had mine back when I was in middle school. I'm 21 now so......it's been about 8 years ago I bought the one I had. Sold it a couple years ago.

Not that the savage isnt a good rifle but....For about 40-50$ more you could pick up a cz452 22mag and have zero worries about anything.

I also have a 93-17. They're are some machines aftermarket mags that may help with feeding. But I have had zero problems with mine.

Not that it would have anything to do with the recommendation, but I've heard getfoxy has a considerable amount of money tied up in CZ stock.

Tell ya what, if there is only $40-50 difference between the Savage and the CZ, I think I'd lean towards the CZ myself. I might even talk Gary into selling me a lil of his stock.

Along with these other guys, I don't own a Savage 93 in the .22 mag, but I've got a model 93 in 17hmr and never had any mag feed issues.

Mine doesn't like to feed the winchester 40gr jhp very well, but they group freak'n great out of it. Thats the only ammo that doesn't feed well, and accuracy it good from almost every load I have tried. I have no regrets about buying this gun. Mine is 2 years old.

I have a .22 mag 93brj and my coworker has a .17 savage 93, both have the same quirks when it comes to the mags. When you pull the bolt back to chamber the first shell, and only the first shell you need to push up on the mag to make sure it's seated good or your second shot may be a click instead of boom. It really is second nature now and doesn't bother me as I do it without thinking. Once you make sure the mag has been seated fully all of the shells cycle fine.

One other problem I had with my mag when it was newer was that sometimes when you would load 5 shells and cycle the action more than one shell would try to come up out of the mag. I ended up using my thumb to bend the lips of the magazine on the back and haven't had a problem in over 500 rounds so I guess that was the quick fix for that.

You must've done the same search I did when I bought my 93. I saw all kinds of posts on the internet about the mags acting up.

As far as ammo, here's a link to where I posted about trying different kinds of ammo out of my 93. Might give you an idea of where to start. I did pick up a box of the Hornady critical defense 22 mag yesterday as I've been wanting to try it out for accuracy. If it's got decent accuracy I would think it would make an excellent hunting round. I didn't get a chance to shoot last night because it's been raining here but maybe tonight.

Let me say that 5 years ago I would turn my nose up at the savage brand but once I started to actually shoot them and realize what you get for the money I have become a believer.

I wouldn't stress the mag issue. But if you don't want a savage you may need to look at the Marlin's. Not many options under $300. Now I started with the Marlin 983 but it wouldn't eject an unfired shell. 3 times it went back and within 30 rounds it would act up again. Still love the tube fed Marlins but my experience made me go savage.

I had the same thing with my Marlin as kel did but kept it. It shoots well. It is funny when I saw this thread tonight. My neighbor and I shot his Savage 93 22 mag this afternoon and I am in love with it. Nice rifle. Just wish it had a bigger mag than 5. Definitely going to pick one up.

Sounds good. What is an average group for this gun at 50yds with proper ammo out of the box? from what I've read its not uncommon to have 1/2" groups w/o "mods".
