Savage 93 problem

Does anyone have problems with the clip on the savage 93 17hmr? The bolt hangs up often when there is more than 1 bullet in the clip. Are there any remedies to help with this dilemma? I think the spring is too tight what are your thoughts?

I have 2 of them and have trouble with the clips not in far enough when locked in place. I get by with them by holding the clip up when chambering a round from the first round to the last.

i feel like i shouldn't have to do that you know? i feel like this gun would've made a better single shot... it shoots great but that clip is garbage!! i wish i would've bought the marlin honestly

i had the same problem on my 93,i found that inserting the clip with the bolt open helped but did not fix it. here is a reply from savage to another model 93 owner. this helped my 93 maybe it will help yours also.

Contacted Savage Arms - Support said to remove clip, use screwdriver inserted between clip release and clip guide - using slight pressure, spread the two. We did this and all feed problems solved.

larr is right. None of mine had this issue, but my friends did. He would load his mag and before he could load it all the bullets would fly out and it wouldnt feed. He beat it on the bench and pryed it with a screw driver, problem solved. Good luck with yours.

i could see this is the cause of the problem. i tried messing around with it and it's really touchy. if you open it too much then the bullets won't stay in. now my screw driver put a nick in the metal and that is adding to the bullets hanging up on that piece. overall i'm very disappointed in the design of this clip.

Well the Clip isn't uniformly parallel. but at the center of the rear lip it measures .240". casing of a .17 is roughly .240" and the base of the rimfire is .290" hope this helps. and still don't believe this fixes the problem. i'm open to sell this accurate shooting rifle just because of this problem. i'd love to have a marlin :S

The problem is that you guys are trying to use clips when you should be using mags (magazines).

But I have had no problems with the two factory mags I use in my model 93.

+1
I can't understand why so many people say "clip" when they really mean magazine. A "clip" is what is used to load a magazine either fixed or detachable.

I'm having trouble identifying if you are suggesting possible remedies to the Savage 93 problem. Thanks for your help and obvious expertise of the definitions of mags (magazines) versus clips.

You're more than welcome. Glad I could help in some little way.

Is there one make of ammo (bullet type) that is more prone to give you problems than the others? Or do they all give you problems?

i've only used hornady 17, 20, and remington 17grn. i've noticed it with all the ammo. i was looking at trying my luck with a new mag and hoping it works better. but 20+ bucks i think i'll pass. i wish there were more of a selection for these guns especially aftermarket magazines and stocks.

Call Savage support they will send you a walk through.

I have found it takes a bunch of "cycles" of fully loading rounds in the mag. In the mean time, I slap the mag in hard and that "helps", but thats not a fix

I agree its a bad on Savage design on this paticular rifle,....and its irritating as it gets to me.

I have had several rounds have the lead bullet get pushed into the brass completely after the tip of the round got caught on the barrel and I pushed the bolt forward. This is extremely dangerous if fired!! (Meaning the bullet is completely inside the brass sitting freely in the powder with nothing covering the opening of the brass.)

They need to fix it. Even my new mags did the same thing. I had to adjust the actual slide the mag slips onto.

That's BS in my humble opinion.

i've had the same problem with the bullets being pushed into the case. i just figured that it's rimfire and the cases probably are less rigid than that of its centerfire counterparts. i had wanted this gun for 3 mos. prior to the purchase and the first time i shot it i was sorely disappointed. i'm gonna try and sell it, it's not worth having a rifle i can't rely on. i'd rather rely on my .22 or a sling shot.
