Savage 93r17 GV or some other 17 HMR

Well with tax returns coming in the next few months I want to start researching which 17 HMR to buy. I would like to keep it in the $200-300 range and I've noticed Savage has a bunch in that range. I would like a wood stock so that's why the 93r17 GV caught my eye. Barrel profile doesn't matter to me.

So which variation of the 93r17 do you guys like? Any input about different manufacturers is welcome also.

I have a Savage 93/17HMR, it's the stainless heavy barrel w/laminated thumbhole stock model, and it shoots pretty decent, but if I were buying a new 17HMR tomorrow I'd get a CZ 455 varmint. The CZ is a little money than you're wanting to spend but I think they make a better product.

I have a Savage 93-17 BRJ. Nice shooting rifle. I did replace the accu-triger with a rifle-basix. I prefer the solid shoe and no blade. It shoots decently enough, but it isn't entirely refine. I'd not mind upgrading to a CZ or something with a bit more build quality. Having said that, the Savage is a perfectly serviceable rifle.

I have a 93 GV in left hand and it is very accurate. Mine is a pre-Accutrigger rifle and I did the shim job on the trigger and it is fine. Getting ready to try some A17 ammo in it. So far it likes Hornady 17 grain plastic tip bullets the best.

Savage magazines plain out suck. For that reason alone i would encourage you to buy another brand rifle. For that $, a marlin xt-17 varmint, or a ruger. Having handled both id say the ruger. If you can hold out alittle longer def get the CZ. I have a 455 american, and its easily the nicest rimfire youre going to buy for under $500

Zero issues with mine (magazine). Factory or aftermarket.

I'm going to try and make it to my LGS this weekend to see if they have any 17's. I'm kind of partial to Savage, the first gun I shot was my grandpa's Savage 340 and that's what I used for groundhogs for many years. I recently bought a model 12 in 204 and absolutely love it.

Ive had 2 93r17's and 1 93 .22wmr, and all 3 liked to spit all the shells out of the mag, not fun trying to find ammo in the leaves while squirrel hunting...bending the mag lips helped some, stainless mags were the solution...for $100 more id get a CZ

I have a Savage 93/17 LH, wood stock, blue for 12 or more yrs. Like it very much & has & still is very accurate for MY use. Right now its equipped with a Bushnell 10X 3200 scope. A fun rifle.

I have a 455 varmint. It started as a .22lr. I sold the barrel and bought a fluted 17hmr barrel. It averages .38 at 50 yards.

I have been thinking of getting a A17 for my girl.

If I was going for a lower priced HMR I think I might pick the ruger american.

I have a 93R17 FV. I will admit the magazines leave a bit to be desired, but they're definitely not a deal-breaker for me. Mine just flat-out shoots.

For what it's worth, if you are having trouble with the magazines on your Savage 93/17 give Savage Tech a call and they will usually send you out a replacement for free.

I bought one of the A17 target models last year and they are pretty darn accurate. After tuning up the trigger, which was terrible in mine, it is easily on par accuracy wise with my 93/17 and the Butler Creek 25rnd mags for the A17 make rat shooting a whole lot of fun.

You could be waiting awhile for that edition. lol

I picked up the savage a 17 last winter. Put a boyds feather weight thumb hole on it. 1/2" gun... absolute murder on gophers and my go to rig for foxes.. A little light for song dogs as they like to run on me.. but absolutely love that little rifle.. and being able to stay in the gun being it's an auto.. priceless on moving targets.
