Savage A17 Semi auto!

Anyone else see any videos on this new little 17 HMR rifle? I know it's a Savage and will likely feel very cheap, but I think it could be a very fun little gun. I am not a fan of the goofy looking bolt handle, but as long as it cycles and functions reliably, I could over look it. Lol.

I have a heavy barrel Model 93 in 17 HMR and it is very accurate and I've never had any issues with it. If Savage offers this with a heavy barrel, I may have to pick one up!

Just watched a video of it on youtube and it apears that the stock will be a lot like the Bmag unfortunately. Oh well if its accurate and reliable i would wait til boyds makes a stock then get one for sure.

does this mean the "not for use in semi-auto" warning on every box of 17hmr ive seen will be removed or has something in design or ammo changed?

I just saw a report on it and it will shoot all 17 HMR ammo but CCI has come out with a new 17 HMR round made for the new savage A17. The new one is 100 FPS faster than reg 17 HMR ammo, 2650 FPS rather than 2550.

That warning is on those boxes because too many folks were blowing the magazines out of the bottom of their 10/17M's or splitting cases (I happened to be at that particular party) and then blaming the ammo manufacturers for double charges. The problem was never with the ammo, it was with the traditional blowback action that would unlock before the pressure had subsided enough (kinda like casehead swipe or popped primers in an AR). The old semiauto rimfire designs were seriously "over gassed" by the 17HMR, hence they were all pulled from the market.

This Savage is pretty exciting. I don't tend to mind a bolt action in 17HMR, maybe just because I don't do too much high volume plinking with mine (I treat it like any of my centerfire rifles). But... This is pretty exciting.

Maybe that explains why the B-Mag action was so under-developed? Because Savage was spending all of their energy developing an interrupted blowback semiauto action!

I hope that it fares better than the Remmington did. After all, it seems easier to find 17hmr ammo today than it is to find any .22 cal rimfire? Besides, the HMR can take down anything in its path.. lol

Yea & out to 1000 yards!

Just change the barrel out and you got a functional semi 22 mag.. It has the barrel nut also.. With after market parts it could be just as accesorable as the 10/22. .. That would be sweet..

I don't like that it doesn't hold open after the last spent round.. The bolt handle does look large and goofy, but all in all, probably would be a fun small game hunting rifle. Maybe in the future they will offer it in a nicer laminated stock or something..

Looks very interesting to say the least. I emailed savage on a release date and got no response. So maybe they don't know yet.

i'm excited. i've wanted a reliable and safe semi-auto 17hmr since about 3 weeks after i got my 93r17 and the price point seems about right.

or at least a whole lot cheaper than re-barreling a 10/22mag into a 10/17hmr would have been.
