Savage Axis 22-250 - Discounted

I’ve been thinking about another 22-250, currently have a mid-weight custom gun. I’ve had an eye on local Armslist & Gunbroker. Just today I see some Walmart’s have the Savage Axis on markdown, $198.

I checked, my local store had one. I do have an older Savage 110, 30-06, no problems.

Anyway, at that price I bought one, will try it out. They do/could have other chamberings, saw a 243. I plan a little tweaking before testing, trigger, maybe better free-float, etc..

The reviews seem O.K.

I have two of them. A camo 223 my daughter claims with a Timney in it and a 22-250 that is a very good shooter with CFE223 powder. Both shoot very small groups if you have the right load and I do my part.

The Savage Axis is 1/12” rifling. My other custom with a Shilen barrel is the common 1/14”.

When my custom was being planned I had an in depth talk with the gunsmith. When mentioned it would be mostly lighter (50 grn) bullets for prairie dogging his advice was to stick with the 14”.

For a $200 gun, it will still kill coyotes just fine. We're not talking about bench competition rifle here.

I had a cheap scope I mounted to test, did fine. Still waiting on better mounts, then I’ll try a better scope. The trigger is right at 3 lbs now.

I was all ready to order the spring kit, that comes with a spring, screw, washer, & Allen wrench off eBay, about $10. The seller was a little slow. I ended up clipping 1.5 coils from the factory spring. The gun fired fine, and came in just under 3 lbs on my trigger gage. I cancelled my trigger kit order.

This is a casual gun, if I get unreliable firing I’ll go with a replacement spring. Further testing is in the works. I know some don’t like the idea of clipping a spring, working fine, but still testing.
