Savage axis 22-250 experience

First off id like too say I'm a new member but somewhat long time reader and this is my first post so go easy lol. Ok so after a while of research on what rifle and ammo I wanted too get for some coyote control, I went out and got myself a savage axis in 22-250 scope combo and some hornady 55gr vmax ammo to go along with it (on a pretty strict budget at the moment). I've ready ALOT of good things about these rifles and very very few bad things, so I took it too the range and couldn't hit paper at even 50 yards. I've seen a lot of people saying they pull them out of the box and they shoot pretty good at 100 yards....this is def not the case with mine unless it's something I missed or am doing wrong. So can some other axis owners please let me know if the out of the box 100 yards hitting atleast on paper is true or did I just expect way more from this rifle without a lot of adjustments than I should have? Kinda worrying I made a mistake picking this particular rifle 😞 and sorry for such a long read everyone!
Thanks in advance.

Zero'd at 25 yards, and then moved back too 50 after it was dead on. After I seen dirty fly with 3 shots at 50 I packed it up and went home more for the rifles safety than anything lol (got a short fuse)😡. But after I got back and cooled off a bit I went over it and double check my mounts and rings. Nothing seemed loose enough too throw it off but I'm gunna try again tomorrow. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem with them it didn't seem right too me at all. Shoulda atleast Been on paper at 50yrds

something very wrong. 25 to 50 yards should not be to much difference. how big was you target?

How much shooting experience do you have?

As a side note shooting good "out of the box" doesnt mean "sighted in" out of the box.

Shooting is 5% rifle and 95% shooter. Get more range time.

Shooting from a bench? Solid rest? My experience with savage is easily 1 moa, saw a guy shooting from a bench frustrated. Because his shots were all over the place, he was using a jacket as a rest. Whats the twist rate on the axis? if it came with the scope installed the first thing I do is pull it apart and remount. Tightening everything down.

mike, you said that the rifle was dead on at 25yds,then you moved to 50yds and saw dirt fly. was the flying dirt high? when sighting in at 25yds the point of impact should be at least one inch low
since the barrel is about 1 1/2" lower than the line of sight and the bullet is going up to the line of sight. if the rifle is dead on at 25yds it will be high at 50yds from a 22-250. spike

First of all good choice on the savage. Second take the scope and rings and throw them in the trash. 90% of the gun scope ring combos that can be purchased are a good gun with a pile of crap scope and rings. Order a set of talley light weight rings($50). Then look into a vortex or Leupold scope. I would suggest a 3-9 or 4-12 power scope. Over time I would replace the stock and get it bedded if you are looking to really improve the accuracy, but not necessary right now. If you do not have a wheeler scope mounting kit, I would highly recommend getting one. The levels and the torque wrench are so handy and the stuff for lapping those rings is nice to have. If not take it to a gunsmith to mount the scope. Lastly, if you purchase from midway usa, when you check out and go to pay, be sure to donate to the NRA when asked if you would like to.

I disagree, not that a scope package isnt good or that o would pay extra for one, but theyre adequate for most users. I have a pile of cheap scopes ive stripped off of rifles, but they are generally MOD capable. Tbh i could duct tape a center point on a rifle and be useable at 50 yards. Tb really honest at 50 yards you can be on paper with a plain barrel.

Assuming he has a 12" target and is "dead on" at 25 yards but off paper entirely at 50, the bullet would be traveling perfect for 25 yards and then veering off course dramatically at 26 yards. Thats not an optics mount problem.

I wonder if the the 55 is to heavy for the twist. Though im not sure what the twist on that is.

From savages website it looks like the savage axis package is a 12 twist. 55 are probly a bit heavy for that twist but thats not gonna fix this big of problem. My old 22-250 with a 12 twist always shot the white box winchester bullets the best. Which was nice cause they were one of the cheaper rounds you could buy at the time.

Your rifle, if a 12 twist, will shoot 55 gr. just fine. You have a scope issue. It's either defective or not mounted properly. I agree with an earlier post: remount the scope with a torque wrench and google " how to bore sight a rifle". That will get you "on paper" (use a large target so you hit it) then adjust your point of impact to bullseye. A solid rest is paramount. Start out at least 50 yds bore sight then move to 100.

you bought it new and immediatley took it out and shot it?in my opinion always clean the bore before shooting, you would be suprised at what is in there!but thats just me!

You can run 55 gr bullets through a 14 twist 22-250 pretty easily, they should definitely stabilize in a 12 twist. Bullet stabilization has more to do with length and bullet design than it does with weight. The 55 gr Vmax is a flat base design and should stabilize just fine. Even if the bullet was unstable you would probably still see it show up on paper at 50 yards it just might make some funny looking holes. I would say this is the least likely possibility.

It sounds like optics, or shooter error is the problem. I have had personal experience with the scope and rings that come with the Axis and they are pure junk. Being on a budget makes it tough but if you can swing an upgrade that is my suggestion.

Well I think I figured out the problem, thankfully because upgrades won't happen for a lil while so what I got is it for now but first thing will be optics for sure. For some reason the scope was sloped just slightly and It was so slight I almost didn't catch it lol I feel dumb but I will be re bore sighting and zeroing it back in here in a little bit so I'll keep y'all posted on the outcome. Thanks for all the ideas everyone! The only thing I don't like about this rifle is the flex in the stock so thankfully Boyd's makes a pretty cheap replacement. And for some reason the clip dont like too lock in without givin it a good firm bump. Is there replacements that have a metal clip on it instead of the flimsy plastic?

No worrys lol I'm really picky about clean rifles. I already had it cleaned and oiled before I took it out of the room I opened the box in. (Sorry for double post)

It was sloped down in the front and I'm not sure why. I didn't get into looking for the reason I just remounted it and it's now level. I shoulda tried too find the problem but I just wana get it within 1" groups ASAP. I hear the yotes up on the ridge behind my house every afternoon and night taunting me
