Last night was my highschool trap team banquet (that i coach) and my trap kids and parents went all out and gave me a very generous gift in the form of cabelas gift cards. I think i am going to pick up a savage hog hunter in. 308 and am curious how you guys would setup the optic to also utilize the iron sights as well. My dad has a 270 with see thru rings that has killed many deer in its days but a buddy of mine says qd rings are the way to go. What are your guys thoughts? Im going to be using it mostly as a ranch/truck gun as well as a hog and deer rifle

If you decide to use "see through scope mounts" on your Savage be sure to also use a Tasco scope and a fat leather sling with a picture of a deer on it. And don't forget the Remington Core-lokt ammo.

The one and only time I tried 'see through' mounts, I found it a little difficult to use quickly...Would have probably been less so if I had more practice with them....It was just awkward for me...

I've used the Warne QD rings on several of my competition rifles and still have them on a couple...My need was to be able to switch optics for specific needs in the various stages that were presented that allowed me to maintain perfect 'zero' for the weapon...Change time is about 30 seconds....

Scope mount:

EO-Tech mount on same rifle:

Same set up on my Praire Dog rifle in case I need a stronger optic:

The bottom rifle has a LaRue scope mount that is also easy to use and still maintain 'zero' when reinstalled...

Go with the QR rings, see-throughs are a pain, too high to use the scope quickly. I prefer a low power variable with a big FOV and leave them on for all my hunting. I use QR's so I can swap in a high power scope for load developement.

Years ago I used to use a lot of the Weaver and Pachmayer swing aways when I was hunting up in heavy snow country. Sneaking through the pines and looking down to find a big glob of snow on the lens is a painjust flipping the scope to the side is quick and easy with little movement when you have a big buck standy accross the clearing.

Are you really ever going to use the iron sights? I would suggest Talley lightweights and a fixed 6x scope for the ultimate hog gun.

If you have to get some Weaver rings and secure a properly sized hex wrench somewhere on the gun, like under the buttpad. Of course then you will need a screwdriver, or a can opener... ;-)
