Savage Pillar Bedding Kit

We ran into a snag on the 243 that we are putting together for my buddy's dad. I will go into more detail when I do the thread for that rifle but now we are going to have to pillar bed the stock. We thought it came pillar bedded but did not. All the kits I have found except some universal ones from brownells say they are for Rem 700s. Does anybody know if there is a specific kit for the savage that includes all of the tools needed? How tough is it to do a pillar bedding job? Thought about bedding the recoil lug while we are at it. Any info or links is much appreciated!

PS this is on a laminate thumbhole stock by the way.

I have not seen a savage "kit", though you will need the right pillars. Many Remington pillars won't work, even when cut to length, because you can't have a fat rear pillar and it needs to be cut out to clear the trigger:

Bedding a laminate stock should not be hard with some basic tools, like a drill and a dremel. And yes, you will want to bed behind and to the sides of the recoil lug. There are plenty of instructions and videos out there on how to bed a stock.

On a Savage, I would float the rear tang.

Thanks for the info springer. I actually found a solution to the problem. We ended up having to exchange bottom metal from cdi precision and Jeff offers a pillar bedding job for $20 if you send the stock down. Can't say enough about their customer service. We are going to attempt the lug bedding while I'm home for Christmas so we will see how that goes. Thanks again for the info and link. For future reference, do you know if the pillar bedding tool kit like brownells offers will work with the savage pillars? I got a stock I need to put pillars in on my 270. Thanks!

The only kits I see there are for Remington, so no. I'm not sure why you need a kit. All you need is Devcon or the bedding agent of your choice, an appropriate sized drill bit for your pillars if you are installing them, a hacksaw for the pillars if you need to cut them to length, and a Dremel to remove material to make room for the bedding. Splurge on a Forstner bit if you really want to do it right.

I would not just bed the lug, I would bed the whole action. I prefer to install the pillars correctly first, then follow the many online instructions to remove stock material and bed all required surfaces from the lug on back. It is not a hard job if you use enough release agent.

I use clear shoe polish with Devcon. Last spring I did two Savages in two evenings after work, they both shoot half MOA or a bit better (after market barrels).
