Savage Predator Max 1 .243

The specific model of rifle im looking at is the Savage Predator MAX 1 .243 The rate of twist on this barrel is 1 in 8.25" The rifle seems like itd be a dream rifle however my concern is that the twist is too fast for the 65 vmax. I could shoot 75's if I absolutely had to. Can anybody throw out some solid information on if this barrel twist would be too fast for the 65 vmax? It appears on savage's website that this rifle is the only "predator" model with the accustock. The other models seem to have no accustock but are 1 in 9.25" twist.

white feather...don't want ya to think ur being ignored...don't know how "solid" my opinion is but 1-8.25 is for 100grn&heavier&VLD designs...65grn would be really overstabilized (and there are differing views on "overstabilization")...berger recommends 1-13 for their 68grn FB so you can see there's a sizeable gap...shilen believes to fast a twist leads to inaccuracy.

Has anyone recieved one of the Max-1 rifles yet??, was thinking of picking one up but wanted to se what others thought?, seems like kinda a heavy carry gun @ 8.5 lbs.!
have a predator 10 in the 204 and love it and its only 7.25 lbs. accustock really that much heavier?

They didn't last long on Bud's. Sold out of all calibers but the .223 in three days. Twist rates are fast, and the weight is a little discouraging. Other than that, they look like great rifles. Would look good next to my R-15 and my Tristar Shotgun, all three dressed in Max-1 camo...

I doubt that twist rate, even so the longer bullets will do well in a faster twist rate. I also doubt that the lighter bullets will fail. Most 243 are 1:10 as mine is, and 90g bullets are not all that accurate in my gun. Its is not so much the weight but the length, usually a direct relationship.

Called savage today... the woman i talked to said the twist rate on the .243 is suppose to be 1 in 9.25. Assuming she is correct... the website is a typo. As far as the bullet weights.. Ive seen a couple savages shoot factory 55 and 58 grain ballistic tip bullets 1/2" out of the box. Should shoot light bullets very well.

Thanks for the replies and for digging up some more info for me guys. Im not that concerned about the weight as the rifle ive been toting weighs in at just over 13 pounds when its wearing all of its goodies. I'm more or less disgusted that I cant find one of these anywhere.. I've got my dealer searching high and low for one but they dont seem to exist. The game and fish says there are no mountain lions in arkansas..... I say there are no model 10 accustock predators.

Well here is what im hearing.... this gun is a 2010 model. Savage just started shipping them out last week and they only went to certain wholesalers first. I called my dealer and had the same response that she couldnt find any yet. But the woman at savage told me that they are a cataloged rifle and will be available. Its just a little on the early side to find them easily. I have actually see a couple up for auction. Im pretty sure im gonna buy one within the next few weeks myself.

the savages you guys are refering to were built to help stabilize all the lead free bullets as they are longer than bullets of similar weight with lead

The thing I don't understand about The Savage predator in Max 1 is that only the stock is camo, not the barreled
action. The same rifle in the Mossy Oak Brush, the entire
rifle is camo. Grizz

Last year you could get the predator in Max1 and it didn't have the Accustock but was full camo. This years has a fluted barrel instead of the camo. I wonder why they only did it in the Max 1 pattern that way?

I'm a little divided. I'd like to have the Accustock, and the fluted barrel probably cuts a little weight, but the full camo was one of the appeals when I got my 22-250. The MO Brush is a better pattern for me anyways so might go with the .243 in that.

Not many scopes come in that pattern or camo for that matter. So they would have to be dipped for it to match. I like the barreled action matte myself.

Has anybody purchase done of these Predator Max 1 rifles and care to comment on the gun? I am considering either it or the non-Accustock version (Predator Hunter).

I am especially interested in opinions on the Accustock and wondering if it is true that Savage recommends a specific torque sequence and specification for screwing the action back into the stock after maintenance? I've read some posts elsewhere that suggest the "wedge" piece of the Accustock is being recommended to be left out.

I bought my wife a Predator Max 1 in .22-250 and my son a Model 10 Precision Carbine in .223. Both have Accustock and Accutrigger. They are absolute shooters, both producing 3 shot cloverleafs at 100 yards with fewer than 20 rounds having been fired through them. I did have to send my wife's back to have the Accutrigger replaced, as it occasionally would not fire. They fixed it the first time. I'm planning on getting myself a Predator Max 1 in .243 for deer and yotes.
