And it looks like all the parts will
be here next week...Now I need to get some dies, brass, and
bullets!

Thanks to all that replied. Great discussion.

Im guessing you have a barrel nut, lug and action wrench coming with the barrel. Jim is super nice, nothing but good reviews and compliments from those who deal with him. It's awesome he had exactly what you wanted in stock.

Good luck with the build. Post pics when your done.

I had to laugh at you and MPFD nailing the action wrench sales
job. I had a barrel nut wrench from a previous Savage
project. And I would have passed on the action wrench, as I
have done this before without one. But, since this is a
"switch barrel" project, which means it isn't just a one time
shot, I thought the action wrench would help speed up and
smooth out that process. Yes he talked me into a barrel
nut. We shall see if it is worth the price. He saved me
from waiting for a new bolt baffle, as it never occurred to
me that Savage would have a different one for 223 Rem/204
Ruger versus the 308 case family. After talking to Jim, I
checked the bolt, and sure enough I would have been cussing
this omission when went to swap the bolt head. I picked up
a recoil lug and some lighter accu-trigger springs, too.

Yes I feel pretty fortunate to find the barrel, and a decent
price, with no 3-4 month wait time.

The only tools I ever use are a barrel vice and barrel nut wrench and have changed barrels out on over a dozen Savages with no issue's, a dead blow hammer helps sometimes on a new rifle to whack the nut wrench but so far I've just had to tap on it I also always shoot a little Kroil through the forward most scope mount hole it goes right into the barrel threads and inbetween the nut and recoil lug if you warm up the nut a little the Kroil wicks right in.
I also use a go nogo gauge a lot of people use a case but I like to use gauges

You can get by with just the go-gauge by putting a piece of adhesive tape on the rear of the gauge, just make sure it measures .0002" and you will be fine. I use the action wrench and it works great plus you don't have to worry about the barrel vise slipping and marring your old barrel.

I have considered getting a ready-made barrel for my Stevens 200 for quite some time. I have a .223 and have considered a 6x45 or a 17 Remington barrel.

The question I have is this: If I switch barrels (using a go guage to headspace of course), switching barrels back and forth as needed, will that in any way affect the accuracy loads I have previously worked up for the various calibers?

For instance, if I work up a great load in 6x45, then switch over to a 17 Rem for a while, then go back to the 6x45, will that affect my accuracy?

Just curious.

Thanks Rick! Do you replace the lug or nut or just go with the originals?

FWIW, I'm not building a bench gun.

I usually replace the lug I don't know if it helps but it can't hurt, I just use the factory nut except for one action I had T&T

I want to thank the posters that suggested calling Jim at
Northland Shooters Supply. I got a call last night, the
260 Rem. barrel, and misc. parts and tools, will arrive, via
brown truck, TODAY! Call on Friday, trying to avoid a 4 month
wait for a barrel, and get EXACT barrel wanted, on Tuesday...I
need to buy a lottery ticket!

Now if the brass, bullets, and dies would get here, I could
get this project wrapped up before the skeeters drive me off
the range.

What brass did you get? I was trying to find some but couldn't. I ended up getting some 243 brass and necked it up.

I found Norma on sale for 25/$29.99 at Brownells. Not my
first choice, but will do for the first load development.
